Summary
On a hot summer afternoon in 1972, three teenagers drove into an unfamiliar neighborhood and six lives were altered forever. Thirty-five years later, one survivor of that day reaches out to another, opening a door that could lead to salvation. But another survivor is now out of prison looking for reparation in any form he can find it. The Turnaround takes us on a journey from the rock-and-roll streets of the 1970s to the changing neighborhoods of DC today, from the diners and auto garages of the city to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where wounded men and women have returned to the world in a time of war.
Author Notes
George P. Pelecanos was born in Washington, D.C. on February 18, 1957. Before becoming an author, he worked as a line cook, dishwasher, bartender, and woman's shoe salesman. His first novel, A Firing Offense, was published in 1992. His other books include Nick's Trip, Shoedog, King Suckerman, Right as Rain, Hard Revolution, Drama City, The Night Gardener, and What It Was. He has received numerous awards including the Raymond Chandler award in Italy, the Falcon award in Japan, and the Grand Prix Du Roman Noir in France. Hell to Pay and Soul Circus were awarded the 2003 and 2004 Los Angeles Times Book Prizes.
He has served as producer on the feature films Caught (1996), Whatever (1998) and BlackMale (1999). He was a producer, writer, and story editor for the HBO series, The Wire, which won the Peabody Award and the AFI Award. He was also a writer and co-producer on the HBO World War II miniseries The Pacific and an executive producer and writer on the HBO series Treme.

One summer day in 1972, three teenage white boys--Alex Pappas and his friends Billy Cachoris and Pete Whitten--drive into a poor Washington, D.C., neighborhood, high on booze and weed, looking for trouble. They confront three young black men, Billy winds up dead and Alex badly beaten. In 2007, Alex runs the family coffee shop, as did his father, and grieves for his son, recently killed in Iraq. Then, one of the black survivors of the incident contacts Alex, opening a door that may finally put the trauma of the past to rest. At the same time, another survivor, the man who beat Alex, has gotten out of prison and has extortion on his mind. *Starred Review* As in Drama City (2005), Pelecanos changes his focus a bit here from those who either commit crimes or attempt to solve them to those whose lives are altered by their proximity to crimes being committed. Alex Pappas is the hardworking owner of a D.C. diner he inherited from his even-harder-working father; Raymond Monroe is a hardworking physical therapist who had to work hardest of all to escape the fate of many of his friends in Montgomery County's Heathrow Heights. One man is white, the other black; they don't know one another, but they are linked by an incident that occurred in their teens, a senseless shooting that followed an equally senseless outburst of racial antagonism. Now it's more than 40 years later, and the two are thrown together again, but this time in an attempt to prevent more violence. Throughout his career, Pelecanos has written again and again of the sense of inevitability that pervades so much inner-city violence: lives running on collision courses, individuals powerless to jump the tracks that poverty, prejudice, and ignorance have set them on. But this time he tells a different story. After starting more lives racing toward one another on those same tracks, he asks, What if we could change course? What if we could reroute our lives? It's a daring premise, one fraught with the temptations of sentimentality and false hope, but Pelecanos tells this story of tentative reconciliation with the same unrelenting realism and concern for the roundness of his characters that have characterized the bleakest of his novels. "INTELLIGENCE was faulty." "Who could have foreseen?" "Mistakes were made." These were among the excuses given by British officials following General Gordon's disastrous foray into the Sudan against the Mahdi Army in 1884-85, which ended, as legend has it, with his simultaneous puncturing by the spears of four dervishes. According to "Kingmakers: The Invention of the Modern Middle East" those who forget the history of Western encounters with the Middle East really do seem doomed to repeat it. This book is the follow-up to Karl E. Meyer and Shareen Blair Brysac's "Tournament of Shadows," a swash-buckling account of the Great Game in Central Asia. "Kingmakers" examines the similar phenomenon of Western meddling and imperialism in the Arabian lands of the Middle East and North Africa, through a series of biographical essays. The subjects range in time and nationality from the British consul-general Lord Cromer, who secured control of Egypt during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to the recent American deputy secretary of defense Paul Wolfowitz and his adventures in Iraq. Meyer and Brysac have some captivating stories to tell. There is the 1921 coronation of the Hashemite prince Faisal as king of Iraq, crowned, according to one report, upon a throne hastily constructed from old Asahi beer crates. There is the very different ceremony that installed the former stablehand Reza Khan Pahlavi as shah of Iran in 1926, for which Vita Sackville-West delved wrist-deep in trays of emeralds and pearls from Persian jewel vaults to select his regalia. Above all, there is the career of T.E. Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia, who rode around the Middle East derailing Ottoman supply trains, recruiting mercenaries to the British cause and bribing Arab leaders (occasionally by mistake: once, he was so careless as to send £25,000 in gold to the wrong prince). Finally, Meyer and Brysac describe the modern successors to these interventionist Britons: interventionist Americans, whose eccentricities and failures have been neither less colorful nor less evident. Despite its thrilling material, "Kingmakers" gets off to a slow start Although Meyer and Brysac are strong on the texture and detail of historical events, they simply do not appear to be very interested in the early part of their story about British imperialism. The first few chapters are a patchwork of glamorous and entertaining anecdotes without much to hold them together. The authors stray into lengthy digressions, some of which - like a five-page diversion into the filming of "Lawrence of Arabia" - tend to have the same effect on the flow of their story as Lawrence's bombs had on the Ottoman railways. These weak chapters show up the worst of Meyer and Brysac's writing style, which is sometimes pretentious to the point of incomprehensibility and becomes more so when they seem to lack interest in their subject matter. The thesaurus takes a battering: Meyer and Brysac will not have half of something if they can have a moiety; they will not give a gift if they can give a lagniappe; they will not quote a saying if they can quote an apothegm. Sometimes it's almost impossible to make out what they mean, as when Gladstone is said to have "habitually lofted oratorical rockets into the unassailable empyrean," when all the poor man actually did was to answer a few questions. Or when the British agent St. John Philby is said "to glare at the world through his owlish shrubbery." What is owlish shrubbery? A shrubbery full of owls? A shrubbery shaped like an owl? A prop from Monty Python? As to what glaring through such a thing might signify, this reviewer is at a loss to imagine. Still, for all its often bewildering language, "Kingmakers" clicks into place when tackling the more recent American involvement in the Middle East. Meyer and Brysac provide some fascinating material on American relations with Ibn Saud and the exploitation of Saudi oil. Pelecanos has a perfect ear for the rhythms of life and language in his beloved Washington - not the nabobs of Capitol Hill, but the ghettoes and the immigrant communities he knows so well. This book is set in the present, but revolves around "the incident" in 1972 when three white boys drove into a black neighbourhood, hurling racial abuse at a group of teenagers. When their escape route was blocked, one boy fled, another was severely beaten, and the third was shot dead. Thirty five years later, Alex Pappas, now running his late father's diner but still bearing the scars of his beating, is contacted by Raymond Monroe, whose brother James pulled the trigger. James is out after a 20-year prison stretch, and all of them are being threatened by the violent criminal Charles Baker, who is bent on extorting thousands of dollars from the two survivors of the incident This is an excellent thriller about choices, family values, loyalty and, ultimately, violent redemption. Once again using the ethnic neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., to explore issues of class and race, and the possibility of bridging those gulfs, Pelecanos (The Night Gardener, 2006, etc.) constructs a taut narrative in which the past exerts a seismic pull on the present. The backdrop of the story sends three white teenagers on a reckless 1972 joyride into a black neighborhood, alcohol undermining their better judgment, as they shout racial epithets that ignite retaliation. Black or white, everyone involved finds his life changed (and one ended) because of a mindless clash and its escalation. It isn't until 35 years later that Alex Pappas, who inherited the family's coffee shop from his father and hopes to pass it along to his son, is able to try to reconcile the past with the present, to discover what really happened on that night, to come to terms, to move on. Alex was the boy who had been most reluctant to participate in that fatal joyride, yet he went along rather than resisting. As a surprise visit reopens old wounds, the question is whether a boyhood mistake will continue to haunt him, or whether he can lay the ghosts of the past to rest. "Whatever you did before doesn't matter," says a character. "What matters now is how you make the turnaround." Pelecanos shows the distinction between those capable of making that turnaround and those who can't, while exploring a common humanity that goes deeper than differences of skin color and home turf. Between black and white, there are many shades of gray. Like his kindred spirits who have also written scripts for HBO's The Wire, Pelecanos deserves the sort of popular breakthrough that Richard Price and Dennis Lehane have enjoyed.
