School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-Opening with his 1945 speech declaring Vietnam's freedom and naming himself president, this biography continues with a brief summary of Ho Chi Minh's accomplishments. Johnson then goes back to his childhood and moves through his life chronologically. Throughout, she paints him as a passionate Communist and freedom fighter, desperate to throw off the yoke of French colonialism. Several potentially confusing points, such as Ho's frequent name changes, are clearly explained. However, the only explanation given as to why the U.S. entered the war with Vietnam is that the government "feared" the spread of communism. The reasons for this, and the greater geopolitics of the Cold War, are not discussed. Large archival photographs illustrate the text. Frequent sidebars offer greater detail and give background information on the politics and culture of Ho's homeland.-Jennifer Rothschild, Prince George's County Memorial Library System, Oxon Hill, MD (c) Copyright 2012.
