School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-7-Dunham intends to help preteen boys deal with the changes that come with the earliest stages of puberty. She explains that as they get older, for example, they'll need to bathe and wash their hair more as adult sweat glands kick in. She gives solid, although conventional, advice about how not to be tempted by drugs or alcohol; how to deal with changes in one's family, such as divorce; how to cope with being bullied; and how to handle emotional swings. Pleasant cartoon illustrations are more decorative than useful. Little attention is paid to the importance of a good diet or body-image issues (such as being overweight or short, both of which are crises for some boys). The author does mention briefly the changes that boys will notice in their penises, testes, and body hair. But there is no mention of sex at all; the words "masturbation" and "condom" never appear, for example. The American Medical Association's Boy's Guide to Becoming a Teen (Jossey-Bass, 2006) does a better job of acknowledging boys' curiosity about the topic.-Walter Minkel, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Publisher's Weekly Review

For boys approaching adolescence comes The Boy's Body Book: Everything You Need to Know for Growing Up You by Kelli Dunham, illus. by Steven Bjorkman. This text on the trials and tribulations of puberty and all that comes with it offers advice on hygiene, grades, sports, family, friends and more. "Quick Tip" sidebars provide straightforward hints in the same fairly no-nonsense tone as the rest of the informational text.
