Booklist Review

This anthology of seventeen short stories by notable Western-genre authors doesn't hold back: the settings are often bleak, the characters are often down-on-their-luck, and the themes are often bitter and painful. None of that should deter the adventurous reader. Editor Rumney selected well-written, thought-provoking, emotional stories, and while the overall collection will undoubtedly resonate, there is certain to be at least one story that makes an indelible impression. (""The Deserter,"" and Loren D. Estleman's description of the futility of war, is a likely candidate.) Still, the stories aren't without levity. The physical descriptions of frontier ballplayers (and the tender portrayal of baseball itself) in Johnny D. Boggs' Contention will make any fan of America's favorite pastime smile. And the ending to Michael R. Ritt's Aces and Eights will make the reader gasp and laugh in quick succession. It is difficult to discern a unifying theme to the collection, other than historical fiction set on the frontier, but regardless, this is a Western-focused anthology with staying power.--Sarah Steers Copyright 2019 Booklist
