Booklist Review

Garden designer Gould here focuses on urban gardens in London and southeast England. And while plants and hardscaping options (paving, fences, lighting) might be the same for North American gardeners, readers will have to take into account their own climate and urban circumstances. Nonetheless, Gould's ideas provide a solid foundation of education and tools for preliminary decision-making. Perhaps the most valuable section is her treatment of three garden types: basements, small urban courtyards, and roof terraces. Each includes a menu of dos and don'ts, such as using light-reflecting materials for basement gardens or consulting with a structural engineer and creating areas of seclusion in roof gardens, as well as pages of appropriate plants featuring color photographs, Latin names, descriptions, and at-a-glance icons. Gould covers working with issues like air-conditioning units, overengineered walks, and air and noise pollution, and offers some solutions. Appealing photographs help in figuring out likes and dislikes; the best bet, as Gould continues to emphasize, is to plan-plan-plan (not plant-plant-plant).--Barbara Jacobs Copyright 2019 Booklist
