Summary

Cruel beetle fashionista, Lucretia Cutter, is at large with her deadly yellow ladybug spies -- and she has a devious plan. When Darkus, Virginia, and Bertolt discover further evidence of her evil, they're determined to stop her.

But the three friends are in trouble. Darkus's dad has forbidden them to investigate any further -- and disguesting crooks Humphrey and Pickering are out of prison. Hope rests on Novak, Lucretia's daughter and a Hollywood actress, but the beetle villainess is always one scuttle ahead...

Beetles are back in an even-more-thrilling, chilling, and darkly funny sequel that will have readers clamoring for more.

Horn Book Review

The genetically modified beetles from Beetle Boy have been further, diabolically altered in this sequel. Lucretia Cutter's plot for world domination is thwarted by the usual gang of kids. Unless prospective readers are as besotted with coleoptera as the book's characters are, they're apt to find the plot of this dark sci-fi comedy pretty over-the-top. Future installments appear likely. (c) Copyright 2019. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Booklist Review

Immediately following Beetle Boy (2016), young Darkus, his beloved companion Baxter an intelligent rhinoceros beetle and other friends both two- and six-legged square off in a rematch with megalomaniac bug breeder and fashion designer Lucretia Cutter. Having already partly transformed herself into an oversize beetle and with an army of transgenic insect minions at her command, Lucretia decides that the time has come to deliver an ultimatum to the world: pausing only to decimate the community of experimental smart beetles rescued from her labs in the previous episode, off she flies to make her announcement before millions of viewers at a Hollywood awards show. Darkus gathers the few survivors and pursues, setting the stage for an authentically buggy climactic fracas. Familiarity with the opener is essential to understanding what's going on in this middle volume. Still, with a cast of thousands, villains both scary and comically bumbling, and rising stakes, the tale scuttles along briskly leaving clear sign of a rousing finale to come.--Peters, John Copyright 2018 Booklist
