The Pulitzer-Prize winning Greenhouse (Becoming Justice Blackmun) has covered the Supreme Court for nearly 30 years; together with Yale Law professor Siegel (Processes of Constitutional Decision Making) she has compiled a compelling review of the societal changes, incidents, and cases that led to the Supreme Court's historic decision. This collection of court briefs and other primary documents from the pre-Roe v. Wade (January 1973) era aims to "recreate the public conversations from which the case emerged." Excerpts from handbooks, flyers, newspaper articles, medical journals, and court documents-written by policy, religious, medical, and government groups-tell the story. Pulitzer Prize winner Greenhouse, a New York Times Supreme Court correspondent for 30 years, and Siegel (law, Yale Univ.) do not focus on legal precedents to the case. Other books, e.g., David J. Garrow's Liberty and Sexuality and N.E.H. Hull and others' The Abortion Rights Controversy in America: A Legal Reader, do that. Rather, the editors examine surrounding issues-the rise of contraceptive use, rights for poor women, and religious perspectives, among others. Divided thematically (reform, repeal, speaking to the Court), the book includes introductory content with each document, enriching readers' understanding. An appendix includes excerpts from ten amici curiae (friends of the court) briefs filed in the case. VERDICT Simplifying a potentially dry and difficult-to-follow topic, this is an excellent book for readers interested in social and health issues surrounding Roe v.
