Gr 5-8-This set offers a thorough, wide-ranging look at animal behavior. Logical organization, effective text, and strong visual support make in-depth information highly accessible. Broad topics are introduced, then explored through a rich variety of well-chosen examples. Animals Depending on Other Animals, for instance, examines behaviors of over a half dozen animals to reinforce reader understanding of commensalism. Each spread includes a large photo spanning two-thirds of a page, often with one or two captioned insets. A look at "Dealing with Snow and Ice," for example, features Adélie penguins tobogganing, along with spot images showing ermine camouflage and a caribou hoof. Each book includes several "Closer Look" spreads that focus on specific topics, such as "mating displays" or individual animals, such as wildebeest migration.
