Author Notes
Writer Elizabeth Adler grew up in Yorkshire in the north of England. She has written over twenty novels including Fortune Is a Woman; The Last Time I Saw Paris; Summer in Tuscany; Invitation to Provence; Meet Me in Venice; and There's Something About St. Tropez. In her books, she describes in great detail the clothing and perfume her characters wear to the scented candles, sofas, pillows, beds and rugs that they have because she believes it tells you more about who they are. She believes that it's the small details that make her stories come to life. She also includes many of her own recipes in her books.

Lust, greed and murder keep readers on their toes in Adler's new novel of romantic suspense. Psychiatrist Phyl Foster is intrigued with the unconscious Jane Doe found-having obviously been left for dead-in a San Francisco ravine. When the woman wakes up with amnesia, Phyl helps her try to remember her past and treats her like a kid sister, giving her clothes and a place to stay. The psychiatrist also runs interference for the woman, newly named ``Bea French,'' with macho homicide detective Franco Mahoney, who follows every lead toward Bea's true identity, which he hopes will help him discover who tried to kill her. After Phyl finds Bea a job as social secretary to a rich socialite, the amnesiac travels to Paris. When her employer dies suddenly, she is left with a fortune, two orphans, a restored French villa-and a 50-year-old murder mystery. Bea's investigation into that murder triggers her memory, so she calls Phyl for help, but the psychiatrist is busy with a jealous new lover. Meanwhile, Franco runs a check on the lover. What he finds sends him rushing to Paris to protect the innocent. Adler is expert at digging deep into her characters' psyches and showing what makes them tick. Her villain here is obvious but wonderfully portrayed-as are all the other characters in this well-plotted, entertaining work. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selection. (Jan.) Cushy as an ermine throw, smooth as a ride in a chauffeur- driven Bentley, bubbly as Veuve Clicquot, this latest treat from Adler (Legacy of Secrets, 1993, etc.) makes murder, thwarted passion, and inheritance disputes delightful. When a young woman is hospitalized in San Francisco, suffering from amnesia after someone tried to kill her, psychiatrist Phyl Forster takes her case to heart. Phyl befriends Bea--as the amnesiac decides to be called--and finds her a job with Millie, a lonely millionaire dowager. Bea and Millie jet off to the Côte d'Azur, where Millie buys the decrepit but elegant Villa Mimosa after Bea has a flashback there. Meanwhile, SFPD Detective Franco Mahoney teams up with Phyl to solve the mystery of Bea's past. The two clash with antipathy and desire: He is a former MA candidate in Romantic literature with passions for Verdi, risotto, and Phyl; she is a steely, cold professional until love transforms her-- unfortunately for Franco, it's love for Brad, whom she meets on a plane to Paris. They begin a torrid affair, and he sweeps her off to his family's Hawaiian cattle ranch. As a woman, Phyl is captivated by Brad's dashing, blond, square-jawed appeal. As a medical professional, she eventually realizes he's psychotic. Brad tells her about his past, about his cruel forebears whose only concerns were money and control, and about his father's half- brother from whom his father wrested a fortune. As Bea researches the history of the Villa Mimosa (which she inherits when Millie dies), it becomes clear that she's been there before and that her past will somehow collide with Brad's--if only she could remember. She needn't worry: Franco and Phyl soon figure things out, and after more worldwide, hair-raising misadventures, everyone ends up safe, in love, and with plenty of money.
