A girl's guide to moving on : a novel

Nichole, a woman in her early thirties, is recovering from a broken heart after learning her husband was having an affair and separating from him. The twist is that her mother-in-law, Leanne, is the one who told her that her son was cheating. Leanne has looked the other way for decades as her own husband cheated, and can't bear to see her son repeating the same pattern. In telling Nichole, she also gathers the courage to leave her husband, and the two women--ex- mother-in-law and daughter-in-law--rent apartments across the hall from each other and support one another in rebuilding their lives and embracing surprising new romantic endeavors.

Debbie Macomber was born on October 22, 1948 in Yakima, Washington. Her first novel, Heartsong, was published in 1984 and became the first romance novel ever to be reviewed in Publishers Weekly. She has written more than 150 novels including Between Friends, Family Affair, Starry Night, Last One Home, Mr. Miracle, Merry and Bright, the Blossom Street series, the Cedar Cove series, and the Rose Harbor series. She received Romantic Times Magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award.

While Nichole is waiting for her divorce to be final, she finds an unlikely ally in her soon-to-be former mother-in-law, -Leanne, who is also divorcing her husband, to whom she's been married for 35 years. The two women decide to support each other by creating an unofficial guide to life after divorce-a guide to moving on. Nichole volunteers at a clothing shop for disadvantaged women looking for employment, helping women put together outfits for job interviews and coordinating donated salon services from the shop next door. The work is fulfilling, and she discovers she has a knack for it. Leanne leads English as a Second Language classes at the local high school, rekindling a love of teaching. Her success is a balm to her soul in a time when she needs to feel wanted and appreciated. Just when it seems the women's lives are back on track, their ex-husbands resurface. This is a touching story about the unconditional bond between two women and how they change their lives. Allyson Ryan is perfect as Nichole, with a believable, frequently tongue-in-cheek delivery.
