Author Notes
Atinuke was born in Nigeria and spent her childhood in both Africa and the United Kingdom. She is the author of the award-winning Anna Hibiscus series, illustrated by Lauren Tobia, as well as Hugo , illustrated by Birgitta Sif, and Too Small Tola , illustrated by Onyinye Iwu. Her other books include Baby , Sleepy Baby ; Baby Goes to Market ; B Is for Baby ; and Catch That Chicken! , all illustrated by Angela Brooksbank. Atinuke lives in Wales.
Lauren Tobia is the author-illustrator of Oscar's Tower of Flowers and the illustrator of numerous children's books, including the Anna Hibiscus series by Atinuke, Are You Sure, Mother Bear? by Amy Hest, Happy in Our Skin by Fran Manushkin, Baby's Got the Blues by Carol Diggory Shields, and The Blanket Where Violet Sits by Allan Wolf. She lives in the United Kingdom.

Gr 1-3-With this introductory phrase, "Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa. Amazing Africa," we are introduced to the many facets of an African child's daily life with her close-knit family. The culture, land, and people of Africa come shining through in Atinuke's absolutely delightful stories (Walker, 2007) in this early chapter book. Four vignettes focusing on the child's life with her large, noisy, extended family point out the value of following traditions. Whether on holiday, selling oranges, dreaming of snow, or advising her Auntie Comfort in America, Anna Hibiscus learns lessons about respecting her elders, working hard, and becoming a proper African lady. Mutiyat Ade-Salu makes the sights and sounds of Africa come alive with her mesmerizing African lilt and clear diction. The humor and the gravity of the text are beautifully expressed, and the images of smiling relatives, lagoons, and the compound where Anna Hibiscus lives linger. One highlight is the simple, joyful paean to snow sung by Anna Hibiscus, although she has never actually seen it. Students will be fascinated by the richness of living near the sea and the rainforest, and will find opportunities to compare and contrast this lifestyle with their own experiences. Linked short stories star Anna Hibiscus, who lives in a large house in a compound in "amazing Africa" with baby brothers Double and Trouble, parents and extended family. The first title in this appealing new series introduces Anna's world. The family goes on vacation, an auntie visits from America, Anna learns what it is to do hard work and she gets an invitation to visit her Canadian grandmother. Her world grows in Hooray for Anna Hibiscus! (978-1-935279-74-7): She starts school, sings before a large audience, tries a hair experiment and visits a very poor neighborhood. These stories celebrate the extended family and the combination of traditional ways with conveniences of the modern world; they contrast Anna's relatively privileged life with that of others in her country and reflect the Nigerian childhood of the author, a storyteller now living in Wales. Tobia's sketches, pen-and-ink with a gray wash, will help early readers visualize the family, unfamiliar customs and clothing and Anna's community. Early chapter books set in modern Africa about a middle-class family are hard to find in this country. Early chapter books that deftly handle the difficult issues of poverty, class, and economics are even rarer. Nigerian-born Atinuke's series about young Anna Hibiscus and her large extended family do these things with grace and humor. Originally published in England, the first two are now available here. Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa amazing Africa, in a city of lagoons and bridges . . . skyscrapers and shanty towns. Her mother is from Canada, her father from Africa, and she has twin baby brothers, Double and Trouble. Each of the four chapters tells a complete story and, while presenting clear cultural differences, explores themes that are universal and child-centered. A story about selling oranges from a family tree is of special interest as a resource for primary classrooms with economics benchmarks. Never didactic, the fluid storytelling is enhanced by Tobia's charming illustrations. Know a child who just started to read independently? These old and new favorites are short, but they pack a memorable punch. my favorite books for fledgling readers don't have ranked letters or numbers or other indicators of "levels" on the covers. They're not part of megaseries like The Magic Treehouse or Junie B. Jones (useful as those books can be to get readers going). What they have in common is gorgeous art and extremely simple but highly literary writing - the kind of writing that lets a young reader know what an inner life can sound like. And while they couldn't really be called full-fledged chapter books, they are often cleverly divided into a few very short chapters, as a sort of secret handshake. These books tell new readers they have fully embarked on the journey to independent reading. All of these, I should add, are also fantastic to read aloud like a picture book to a child who is not reading alone yet. a friend for dragon Written and illustrated byDav Pilkey Scholastic/Orchard, $5.99 Dragon is blue, round, and not at all ferocious - in fact, he's kind and quite dim, which makes you want to protect him from all the trouble that finds him. What he needs most is something harder than it might seem to get hold of: a friend. First published in the 1990s, the Dragon books - there are five in total - are sweet, silly and profound all at once, with more of an edge than you usually find in this kind of story. The villain of the first is downright biblical: a merciless snake who tricks poor Dragon into thinking an apple is the friend he's been longing for. Pilkey is the big-hearted genius behind Captain Underpants, and his watercolor art for this more tender series has regular dollops of the emotional depth he can find in even the goofiest plot turn. TALES FOR THE perfect child Written by Florence Parry Heide, illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier FABLES YOU SHOULDN'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO By Florence Parry Heide and Sylvia Worth Van Clief, illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier Atheneum, $16.99 These ultrashort, ultrawitty tales of naughty children and badly behaving animals won a cult following when they first appeared in the 1980 s, but went out of print. Now they've been reissued with wily new art by Sergio Ruzzier that perfectly suits their offbeat sensibility. We meet Harriet, a champion whiner. "She practiced and practiced, and so of course she got better at it. Practice makes perfect." And there's Chester, a lazy turkey, who won't run when the farmer calls. "The next morning, which was Thanksgiving morning, Chester looked around the empty barn. It pays to be lazy, thought Chester." Heide, who died in 2011, wrote more than 100 children's books, including the classic Treehorn Trilogy, illustrated by Edward Gorey, and it's great to see her dark, winking take on the eternal conflicts between children and parents sally forth for a new generation. anna hibiscus Written by Atinuke, illustrated by Lauren Tobias Kane/Miller, $5.99 These days more American picture books feature racially diverse children than ever and international picture books are increasingly published here, but it's still hard to find early chapter books with children who are black, and children living in other parts of the world. This joyful series about a little African girl named Anna Hibiscus is a revelation - the books ring with laughter even as they stab (delicately) at your heart. In sprightly language and adorable line drawings, they tell the story of a young girl whose eyes are wide open to the beauty and the struggles of the place where she lives. A sense of strong community and mutual caring permeates throughout, with Anna both enjoying the routines of everyday life at her family's comfortable compound and, often, confronting and trying to help children who have much less than she does. Atinuke, who lived in Nigeria as a child but is now based in Britain, works as a traditional oral storyteller, and that's not surprising: She keeps Anna's stories moving while seeding them with helpful repetition and bits of warm humor. LITTLE TIM AND THE BRAVE SEA CAPTAIN Written and illustrated by Edward ArdizzoneFrances Lincoln, $18.99 Little Tim may be the original free-range child. These books were originally published in the 1930s, and they have aged well. Four have been reissued in handsome volumes, with classic pen-and-ink and watercolor art and big, old-fashioned letters telling the tale of Little Tim, who can't be more than 6 years old, but "wanted to be a sailor." He stows away on a steamer and kicks off a life at sea, with occasional trips back to see his relieved (but understanding) parents. There's adventure and danger, of course - in the first book, everything from seasickness to a harrowing storm that almost dooms Tim and the Captain - but it's all told in direct, clear language. The tone is just a tad mock-serious, but eminently respectful of the childhood wish for greater agency. If you're new to Ardizzone's art, you're in for a treat - his dazzling pen lines and watercolor brush strokes dance across the page, creating stirring vistas of the sea alongside witty, humane portraits of Tim and the people he encounters. BARKUS By Patricia MacLachlan Chronicle, $14.99 MacLachlan, the author of the beloved novel "Sarah, Plain and Tall" and many other books for children of all ages, makes her early chapter book debut in this first of a promised new series. The charm is infectious, with MacLachlan's almost hypnotically appealing language assembling a series of surprises for the plucky little redhaired narrator. First, her favorite uncle leaves a superfun dog, who names himself Barkus, at her house. He doesn't talk, but he doesn't need to: In successive stories he makes many exciting things happen, starting with what transpires when he comes to school with her - all the way to the appearance in the little girl's household of, yes, a new kitten too. Marc Boutavant's whimsical, graphically interesting art makes Barkus's adventures seem even more like some kind of candy-colored delight a child would be thrilled to pull out of her pocket. And of course ... FROG AND TOAD STORYBOOK TREASURY Written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel Harper - Collins, $11.99 The books in Lobel's series from the 1970s are something like modern classics, with their warm depiction of the devoted bond between worrywart Toad and magnanimous Frog, who might look somewhat similar but are polar opposites in temperament. While the friends approach life very differently and have the occasional contretemps, together they make a world of their own, a kind of community of two. The language is simple, and there are no contractions, which no doubt made the Frog and Toad books good candidates for the "I Can Read" series treatment they've lately been given, with the numbers on the cover telling parents their level. But I fear those numbers can also signal to kids that these are pressurized, teacher-mandated schoolwork, books that are out to measure them and rank them against their peers. If you can find copies of Frog and Toad without that business on them, I recommend those - with books as deep and rewarding as these, the numbers are just buzzkill. (Yes, they can indeed read - make them want to!) George and Martha Written and illustrated by James Marshall Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $6.00 These James Marshall books about two hippo friends may just be the ne plus ultra of the entire genre of Very Short Chapter Books. Many people consider these to be picture books, and they are rewarding to read aloud to any age child, but I think a fledgling reader will especially appreciate spending time with them. Each volume has four or five self-contained stories - vignettes, really - with few words, all easy to follow. The humor is strange and sneaky - the books kick off with George pouring split pea soup, which he hates but which Martha has made, into his shoe. There is something wonderfully cranky and realistic about the entire premise: two friends who try so hard to be nice to each other, and have a hard time figuring out how to do that. maria Russo is the Book Review's children's books editor.

Anna Hibiscus on Holiday Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa. Amazing Africa. In a country called Nigeria. She lives in an old white house with balconies and secret staircases. A wonderful house in a beautiful garden inside a big compound. The trees are full of sweet ripe fruit and the flowers are full of sweet juicy nectar because this is Africa, and Africa can be like this. Outside the compound is the city. An amazing city of lagoons and bridges and roads, of skyscrapers and shantytowns. Anna Hibiscus lives with her mother, who is from Canada; her father, who is from Africa; her grandmother and her grandfather; her aunties and her uncles; lots and lots of cousins; and her twin baby brothers, Double and Trouble. There are so many people in Anna's family that even she cannot count them all. Anna Hibiscus is never lonely. There are always cousins to play and fight with, uncles and aunties are always laughing and shouting, and her mother or father and grandmother and grandfather are always around. To be alone in Anna Hibiscus's house, you have to hide. Sometimes Anna squeezes into some cool, dusty, forgotten place and waits for that exciting moment when her family begins to call--and then a cousin or uncle finds her and her aunties thank God! One day, Anna's mother told the family that in Canada she grew up in a house with only her mother and her father. "What!" cried Auntie Grace. "All alone? Only the three of you?" "Yes, and I had a room all of my own," Anna's mother said wistfully. Anna's grandmother looked at her. "Dey made you sleep alone?" she asked. "It was not a punishment," Anna's mother said. "It was a good thing to have my own room." Anna Hibiscus and her cousins looked at each other. Imagine! Sleeping alone. Alone in the dark! "Nobody likes to sleep alone," said Anna's grandmother. Anna Hibiscus laid her warm brown cheek on her mother's white arm. "Don't worry, Mama," she said. "You have all of us now. You will never be alone again." But the next week, Anna's father said, "Anna Hibiscus, we are going on holiday. Your mother and myself with you and those brothers of yours. We will stay in a house on the beach." "Only us?" asked Anna. This was incredible. "Only us," said her father. "A quiet holiday." Anna Hibiscus's mother smiled. "But, Papa," said Anna, "who is going to cook and shop and clean and . . . everything? Who will take care of Double Trouble? What about me? Who will I play with?" "I will help your mother to organize everything," Anna's father told her. "You, Anna Hibiscus, will take care of your brothers. You can play with them." "But they are babies!" wailed Anna. "Exactly!" said her father. "Now, enough problems. Let us pack." One week later, Anna Hibiscus, her father, her mother, Double and Trouble, and all their boxes and bags crossed the road to the lagoon and squeezed themselves into a small canoe. The whole family waved them off. "Don't stay long!" they shouted. "Come soon!" The lagoon ran under and alongside busy roads and huge skyscrapers; it ran through markets bigger than towns. For the first time, Anna Hibiscus saw how big the city was. It was gigantic. Then it was gone. Suddenly it was not buildings but trees that crowded the banks of the lagoon. Trees so tall and growing so thick together that Anna could not see into the dark rain forest. Only once did she see some people, looking tiny, on the bank. Morning turned into afternoon turned into evening as they went slowly-slowly. Then Anna could see the island! A white sandy beach with small trees and, behind them, an open wooden house, painted white. It was late by the time they got all their boxes and bags off the boat and up to the beach house. Anna Hibiscus's father lit lanterns, and her mother warmed up food. They were all so tired from breathing sea breezes and carrying boxes and bags that they went straight to bed. Even Double and Trouble slept right through till morning. When Anna and her family woke up, the beach house seemed dusty and dirty. It was full of cobwebs and dead cockroaches. Their boxes and bags were still packed. They were hungry. There was a lot to do. After breakfast, Anna was put in charge of Double Trouble. They stayed downstairs on the veranda, where it was cool and shady, but the boys kept crawling toward the edge. There were no doors for Anna to shut. She ran backward and forward, grabbing each of her brothers in turn and putting them back in the middle of the room. She was hot and sweating when at last she attached the boys to a table leg with her mother's scarf. They yelled and screamed. Anna's father came running. "Anna Hibiscus!" he said. "They are not goats!" He untied them and watched them crawl quickly toward the edge of the veranda. "I see." He sighed. "Double Trouble!" He called to Anna's mother. "I'm taking Anna Hibiscus and Double Trouble to the beach. Where they cannot fall off any edge." Anna's mother appeared in the kitchen doorway. There was a smudge on her face and cobwebs in her hair.
