In The Hot Country , Christopher Marlowe Cobb ("Kit"), the swashbuckling early 20th century American newspaper war correspondent travels to Mexico in April and May of 1914, during that country's civil war, the American invasion of Vera Cruz and the controversial presidency of Victoriano Huerta, El Chacal (The Jackal). Covering the war in enemy territory and sweltering heat, Cobb falls in love with Luisa, a young Mexican laundress, who is not as innocent as she seems.
The intrepid war reporter soon witnesses a priest being shot. The bullet rebounds on the cross the holly man wears around his neck and leaves him unharmed. Cobb employs a young pickpocket to help him find out the identity of the sniper and, more importantly, why important German officials are coming into the city in the middle of the night from ammunition ships docked in the port.
An exciting tale of intrigue and espionage, Butler's powerful crime-fiction debut is a thriller not to be missed.

Robert Olen Butler is a novelist, screenwriter, educator, and short-story writer who grew up in Granite City, Illinois.
Butler served in Vietnam. Following the Vietnam War, Butler began writing. His stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Esquire, The Paris Review, and The Saturday Review, as well as in four annual editions of the Best American Short Stories and six annual editions of New Stories of the South. A collection of his stories, A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain, won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Butler's novels include The Alleys of Eden, Countrymen of Bones, and Sun Dogs. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction and a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Butler also won the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He teaches creative writing at McNeese State University.

*Starred Review* Butler takes his first crack at crime fiction with this stylish historical thriller set in civil war-torn Mexico in 1914. Christopher Marlowe Cobb (call him Kit ) is a newspaper war correspondent in search of action, so naturally he winds up in Vera Cruz just as the American navy is staging a very peculiar mini-invasion. Kit would like to get to the bottom of that, and he would also like to score an interview with Pancho Villa. Then there's the matter of the Mexican woman who may be a laundress but may also be something very different and with whom Kit has very definitely fallen in love. And let's not forget the German entourage: What are they doing in Vera Cruz? Along the way to answering all those questions, Kit gets more directly involved in the fighting than he'd planned. (And so do we: Butler's multipage, one-sentence description of a gun battle between Villa's troops and the Federales is a virtuoso feat of breathless, high-energy descriptive prose.) The plot of this multistranded thriller is at times difficult to follow, but the character studies, sense of place, and mood are utterly gripping. The hard-bitten war correspondent is a staple of the thriller genre, of course, but Butler brings new depth and flair to the familiar figure; only Fowler in Graham Greene's The Quiet American (1956) or perhaps Russell Cruz-Price, Kent Harrington's dissolute journalist in Red Jungle (2005), comes close to Kit Marlowe for that irresistible mix of been-there-twice-seen-this-shit-before cynicism and its polar opposite, an unquenchable desire to see if the next card turned just might be something special. Joe Coughlin, the youngest and wildest son of a highly placed commanding officer in the Boston police force, makes an enemy for life when he and two other hoodlums rob a speakeasy owned by a local mobster named Albert White. To compound that insult, Joe falls in mad, crazy love with White's "lively" girlfriend and steals her away. So who's to say that White might not have had something to do with the botched bank robbery that earns 20-year-old Joe a stretch in the Charlestown slammer, "the worst prison in the Northeast"? The prospect of life behind bars brings out the father-and-son conflict Lehane often taps for his primary themes, as Joe's father fails to convince him that violence breeds violence, and that "the children your violence produces will return to you as savage, mindless things." Meanwhile, Maso Pescatore, the imprisoned but still untouchable capo of a powerful Mafia clan, becomes Joe's mentor, grooming him to take over his bootlegging interests in western Florida. If prison was dangerous fun, Florida presents more deadly entertainment, and Lehane's swaggering style takes on a darker tone in Ybor City, where the big crime families are fighting a bloody turf war for control of the trafficking and distribution of the rum coming through nearby Tampa. Having survived prison by forging strong political alliances, Joe ignores local tribal barriers and teams up with some Cuban suppliers who are as pragmatic as he is, and in only a few years establishes an empire that covers pretty much the entire Gulf Coast. But by the time Prohibition is repealed, Joe's growing distaste for violence causes him to walk away from a sweet deal on a gambling casino. ("The word on you is that you're soft," Lucky Luciano tells him.) Joe's redemption, inspired by a good woman, is a little too tidy and a lot more sentimental than it needs to be. But for a while there, he was the kind of gentleman gangster who conducted himself like a movie star. Jo Nesbo's hard-boiled thrillers about a depressive Norwegian detective named Harry Hole normally feature crazy serial killers and weird methods of murder. PHANTOM (Knopf, $25.95), translated by Don Bartlett, is the most realistic novel in this series, and strange to say, it may also be the darkest. To be sure, there are gruesome deaths here, including one observed from the perspective of (I wish I were kidding about this) a mother rat. But Nesbo's true subject is the deterioration of the social fabric that has made Oslo such a civilized place. Returning home after three years in Hong Kong, Hole is stunned by the derelict condition of old neighborhoods, the aggressiveness of street prostitutes and the surging ranks of foreign drug pushers. A synthetic form of heroin has created havoc in the market, setting off gang wars and leading to the death of a 19-year-old pusher and the arrest of a teenager Hole considers his surrogate son. Although the novel's villains can't hold a candle to Nesbo's typical psychos, they're much closer to the ones you might meet in the real world. THE HOT COUNTRY (Mysterious, $25) reads as if it were written as a lark - and maybe it was. This high-spirited adventure by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler is an antic concoction of genre clichés, literary sendups, personal homages, fanciful history and passages of great writing. Its narrator, Kit Cobb, is a correspondent covering the Mexican civil war for a Chicago newspaper. He's more dashing than Richard Harding Davis, who wears evening clothes to dinner, and more rugged than Jack London, who lands in Vera Cruz "looking as if he'd hopped a freight from the Klondike." Soon Kit learns that a German ship transporting 15 million rounds of ammunition is lurking off the coast. But enough plot. The American military misadventure in Vietnam was the background to the book that made the reputation of Robert Olen Butler: the 1993 Pulitzer prize-winning short-story collection, A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain. An earlier foreign folly, President Woodrow Wilson's 1914 intervention in the Mexican civil war, is the subject of The Hot Country. But the author may also have more recent presidents in mind, as the central character, Chicago Post-Express war correspondent Kit Cobb, rails against "half-assed invasions" and the risks of intervening in internally divided nations. This book begins a trilogy that marks Olen Butler's first incursion into the territory of crime and spy fiction, a sort of writing generally spurned by the types who win Pulitzer prizes, and so represents an intriguing artistic diversion. His journalist-protagonist's full name is Christopher Marlowe Cobb, the first two elements honouring the favourite playwright of his mother, a histrionic and libidinous American actor who had a free hand in her son's naming because his father was absent - and never, despite repeated pleading, identified. He prefers to be known as "Kitt Cobb" because, in a joke typical of Olen Butler's playful tone, he can't stand pretentious authors with three names. Cobb approves, then, of Jack London, the author-reporter who is one of the actual figures bringing a whiff of historical realism to the book. Unlike many fictional hacks, Cobb is completely convincing as a working journalist, his narration letting the reader in on such tricks of the trade as playing dumb in order to trick a source into spilling more of the story. The novel depicts aspects of reporting that have been consigned to history - sending copy by cable, lugging around a Corona Portable No 3 typewriter - and also some that survive, such as semi-fictional reporting and war correspondents submitting their copy to the military censor. Accused of including unpatriotic facts about America's progress in Mexico, Cobb resonantly replies: "I'm such a patriot I believe the press has to be free." Possibly less exemplary for contemporary journalists is Cobb's near-alcoholism and habit of brief desperate sex with the maid who launders his clothes in the cheap hotel. A whisky journalist in a book set in Mexico is always going to stumble into the footprints of Graham Greene - whose The Power and the Glory portrayed a later stage of Mexican tensions - and Olen Butler seems to acknowledge Greene's shadowy presence, especially in a scene in which Cobb holds up a coin in front of a young boy he is trying to bribe, and the child, confusing the money with the oval wafer at holy communion, instinctively makes the sign of the cross. Greene also established the concept of a writer dividing his work between serious novels and "entertainments", a term that feels right for the intent and spirit of this projected trilogy. For all its deliberate parallels with contemporary politics - Mexico's oil is one of the prizes being fought for - The Hot Country draws on many elements of the traditional adventure yarn, including disguises, fist fights and foot races, double agents and alluring young women who may be honey traps or spies. This romp is told, though, in prose that has been written with serious attention. Period slang such as "ninnyhammer" convincingly ages the dialogue, while Cobb's first-person narration is impressively precise about the mix of tongues being spoken in a city occupied by soldiers, reporters and spies, with languages sometimes flipping in the same conversation. Recruiting a street-boy, Diego, as his assistant, Cobb approaches him in American-accented Spanish, with the boy replying in Spanish-inflected English: "You bet." Posing as a German national, the journalist, in conversation with a Mexican cop, speaks Spanish, but from the back of his throat to sound more convincingly guttural. The smooth fabric of the narrative is occasionally ripped by an intrusive lump of research - such as the train routes through revolutionary Mexico - but the tremendous set pieces include an American general briefing correspondents while interrupted by a parrot's impersonations of a previous US ground commander. This English paperback original includes as an inducement two chapters from the middle book in the trilogy, The Star of Istanbul, which No Exit will publish here next June. And, combining an elegy to a dead age of journalism with a critique of a surviving American desire to police the world, this first report makes you want to read on into the war correspondent's second edition. He prefers to be known as "Kitt Cobb" because, in a joke typical of [Robert Olen Butler]'s playful tone, he can't stand pretentious authors with three names. Cobb approves, then, of Jack London, the author-reporter who is one of the actual figures bringing a whiff of historical realism to the book. Unlike many fictional hacks, Cobb is completely convincing as a working journalist, his narration letting the reader in on such tricks of the trade as playing dumb in order to trick a source into spilling more of the story. The novel depicts aspects of reporting that have been consigned to history - sending copy by cable, lugging around a Corona Portable No 3 typewriter - and also some that survive, such as semi-fictional reporting and war correspondents submitting their copy to the military censor. Accused of including unpatriotic facts about America's progress in Mexico, Cobb resonantly replies: "I'm such a patriot I believe the press has to be free." - Mark Lawson.

Prolific Pulitzer Prize winner Butler (A Small Hotel, 2011, etc.) casts his net in distinctly shallower waters when he follows the adventures of a brash American journalist in 1914 Mexico. Revolution is raging, as usual, when Christopher "Kit" Marlowe Cobb arrives in Mexico to interview Gen. Victoriano Huerta. Preoccupied with the rebels Emiliano Zapata and Venustiano Carranza, el Presidente declines to speak with the press after all. By that time, however, an international incident is brewing between Mexico and the U.S., and Kit figures there'll be plenty of work of one sort or another for him and his Underwood. So he's already on the alert when oompah band musician Gerhard Vogel suddenly reveals himself as an American spy who shares Kit's interest in the question of why the German ship Ypiranga has disgorged sinister "businessman" Friedrich von Mensinger and a number of his countrymen and loosed them on Vera Cruz. Tearing himself from his abortive pursuit of Luisa Morales, who washes his clothes but refuses to provide other services, Kit joins Vogel in his investigation of Mensinger only to find himself working alone when Vogel's throat is cut. Acting with more decisiveness than prudence, Kit pinches the passport from Vogel's corpse and prepares to follow Mensinger to Coahuila, where strongman Pancho Villa reigns supreme. There'll be more subdiplomatic shenanigans, more violence (Kit ends up killing four men), and, yes, more romance before Kit, home again in Chicago, receives a letter from President Wilson that sends him back to Mexico for a coda that seems oddly tacked on. Kit is such an ingratiating narrator that you almost forget how unthrilling his larky debut is. Pulitzer Prize-winner Butler is a restless, questing writer whose topics and style vary widely from book to book. His 13th novel (after A Small Hotel) is his first spy thriller, and it's good. When crack reporter Christopher Marlowe Cobb lands in Vera Cruz, Mexico, in April 1914, he finds no war to report on. American troops are on the ground, but President Woodrow Wilson seems reluctant to move them. The Germans, sensing an advantage in the Mexican resentment of Americans, dispatch a secret emissary to woo Pancho Villa to their side. Can Kit stop him? VERDICT The plot clips along, and Kit is an attractive hero. But Butler writes action scenes almost too well: the stream-of-consciousness tone doesn't mesh with the novel's punchy prose style and Kit's ironic asides. But this is a minor criticism in an otherwise enjoyable novel that should attract devotees of espionage and historical fiction. Let's hope we see more of Kit Cobb, reluctant hero.
