Horn Book Review
Young artists progress through simple sequential steps (` la Ed Emberley's books) to create a series of farm animals and their surroundings. Starting with a single line, the images become progressively more complex as the lessons continue, with basic color added in a final step. An appended list of books and websites provides more information about farm life. (c) Copyright 2012. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
Booklist Review
This large-format book from Masiello's dependable Drawing Book series demonstrates how to draw a number of barnyard animals and their surroundings. After a short greeting from Farmer Ralph, an attractive and useful Choose your tools feature shows seven choices (pastel pencil, crayon, watercolor, fine-tip marker, colored pencil, marker, and poster paint) and the line or look each medium creates. The main section of the book leads off with baby chicks shown from three perspectives, with 15 to 18 steps for drawing each one. Other subjects include a hen, rooster, chick, pig, goat, cow, horse, farmer, tractor, and barn as well as grass, haystacks, and hills. Every new line appears as a red addition to an increasingly complete picture. The book extends the farm theme eclectically with information, fiction, songs, crafts, and lists of books and websites, which appear on the last page. Aspiring artists will appreciate the book's spacious format and Masiello's wonderfully clear, easy-to-follow illustrations of drawings in progress.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist

Howdy, Fellow Artists! This is Farmer Ralph, welcoming you to my book on how to draw things around a farm. I have great admiration for farmers. They are tough, hard-working folks who tend and grow all kinds of things that we need to live. Without farmers and farms, where would our food come from? In this book, I will show you simple ways to draw common barnyard animals. You'll also learn how to draw hay bales, a tractor, a farmer, and a barn. Carefully follow the steps in red to create your own farm drawings. Use the challenge steps in blue to add more character and detail. And remember . . . have fun! --Ralph Excerpted from Ralph Masiello's Farm Drawing Book by Ralph Masiello All rights reserved by the original copyright owners.
