Gr 7 Up-After being involved in a car accident, Audrey develops a debilitating anxiety disorder, only venturing out to see her therapist, Dr. Sarah. She is content with her loneliness and anxiety until she meets her brother's gaming teammate, Linus. As their friendship deepens, something in her longs for her former life. Will she be able to find a new normal? Gemma Whalen's narrative style brings the characters to life. Her transitions are smooth and keep listeners engaged. The plot is a bit thin but sensitively handles the delicate theme. Audrey is a dynamic character who will appeal to girls who have been bullied at school. Her relationships with family seem a little unrealistic at first but are fleshed out by the end. -VERDICT This is not Kinsella's best work, but it will appeal to girls interested in romance, friendship, and family dynamics. British teen Audrey suffers from an anxiety disorder that has kept her out of school and hiding behind dark glasses since a bullying incident took place the year before. Meanwhile, her brother Frank is obsessed with an online role-playing game, which causes their mother, a fan of self-help and how-to-talk-to-your-teenager Daily Mail articles, to declare a moratorium on technologyone that Frank is bent on circumventing. When one of Franks gamer teammates comes over and meets Audrey, she finds herself somehow less anxious around himand Frank finds a way to get around the tech ban. Voicing Audrey, Whelans sharply observed narration is LOL-funny; at the same time, Kinsella never hands down pat, unrealistic solutions to the very real emotional trauma Audrey has experienced. sarah hannah gomez (c) Copyright 2015.
