School Library Journal Review
PreS-This mother-daughter team's classic title (1989) has new cover art that punches up the fall colors, adds a chicken, and features apples and pumpkins in the foreground. The text's typeface has changed, but everything else is kept in its original perfection so that yet another generation of youngsters will celebrate autumn, from orchard visits to trick-or-treating.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA (c) Copyright 2011. Horn Book Review
A girl visits Comstock Farm with her parents to pick a bushel of apples and cut a pumpkin from the vine. At home they carve a jack-o'-lantern, then the girl goes trick-or-treating. Simple sentences and friendly art make this a perennial preschool favorite. This new edition sports a fresh cover and reset type. (c) Copyright 2012. Booklist Review
Ages 3-5. In this simple slice-of-life tale, a young girl and her parents head to the country to pick apples and find a pumpkin for Halloween. Geese, chickens, and a turkey follow the family as they wander out to the orchards. When their basket is full, they go into the field where the pumpkins grow. That night the carefully chosen round, orange vegetable is carved into a jack o'lantern, welcoming neighborhood trick-or-treaters. Lizzy Rockwell illustrates her mother's story in bright, autumnal colors and uses the same unadorned shapes the senior Rockwell has become noted for. The book's clean, airy design has an immediate child appeal, while the figures (reminiscent of those seen in Lois Lenski's art) are extremely personable. Nice seasonal fare for the youngest. --Ilene Cooper
