Summary
The year was 1981. Just two months into his presidency, Ronald Reagan was shot after leaving a speaking engagement in Washington, D. C. The quick action of the Secret Service and medical professionals saved the president's life. Adapted from Bill O'Reilly's historical thriller Killing Reagan , with characteristically gripping storytelling, this story explores the events of the day Reagan was shot. Author Notes
Bill O'Reilly was born in Manhattan, New York on September 10, 1949. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Marist College, a master's degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University, and a master's degree in public administration from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
He started his broadcasting career in Scranton, Pennsylvania before moving on to report and anchor in other places including Dallas, Boston and New York. He worked with CBS and ABC News and was the host of the first version of Inside Edition. He began to work for FOX News in 1996 and is currently the host of The O'Reilly Factor. He has won numerous journalism awards including 3 Emmys. He also writes a weekly column that appears in more than 300 newspapers.
He is the author of numerous non-fiction books including Pinheads and Patriots, Kids Are Americans Too, Killing Lincoln, Lincoln's Last Days, Keep It Pithy, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, The Last Days of Jesus, Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies: The Real West, Killing Patton, Hitler's Last Days, Killing Reagan, Old School, and Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies: The Civil War.

This middle schoolaimed adaptation of O'Reilly's adult book Killing Reagan centers on John Hinckley Jr.'s 1981 assassination attempt on President Reagan. The roles of the Secret Service and FBI, Hinckley's background and motivation, and the event's far-reaching consequences are explored. However, the profile is hampered by adulatory prose and myriad unnecessary details about Reagan's pre-presidency life. Once again, broadcaster O'Reilly repackages one of his adult you-are-there books for a younger audience (the last days of Lincoln, Kennedy, and Hitler were previous topics). Kids, who may know little about the administration of Ronald Reagan, will be absorbed by the narrative as it alternates between events surrounding the president and the descent into schizophrenia of young would-be assassin John Hinckley. The book is good at supplying background (including Reagan's political rise) amid the breathless moments of the day the president almost died. The very short chapters are mostly written in present tense, adding to the tension; when the narrative does change to past tense, often in the same sentence, it might trip up readers. Black-and-white photographs are peppered throughout, adding solid visuals, though the grayness of the design drags down the intensity a bit. History buffs will enjoy this, and those for whom the Reagan administration is long ago and far away will be taken by an episode that still chills.--Cooper, Ilene Copyright 2016 Booklist
