Gr 4-7-This is a wide-ranging, brisk overview of the game. Sections briefly skim baseball history, hitting, pitching, defense and baserunning, and the World Series. Each major league team is introduced in a thumbnail sketch, denoting team highs and lows, number of World Series titles, "funky facts," and rising stars. Other topics include baseball slang and nicknames, the 11 ways to get on base, and the author's choices for the best defensive players of all time, including the legendary Ozzie Smith at shortstop. Buckley writes with a lightly humorous touch that should appeal to fans and browsers.
