ANN BAUSUM writes about U.S. history for young people, and she has published eight titles with National Geographic Children's Books including, most recently, Marching to the Mountaintop (2012) and Unraveling Freedom (2010). Ann's books consistently earn prominent national recognition. Denied, Detained, Deported(2009) was named the 2010 Carter G. Woodson Book Award winner at the secondary school level from the National Council for the Social Studies. Muckrakers(2007) earned the Golden Kite Award as best nonfiction book of the year from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Freedom Riders (2006) gained Sibert Honor designation from the American Library Association and With Courage and Cloth (2004) received the Jane Addams Children's Book Award as the year's best book on social justice issues for older readers. In addition, Ann has written about the nation's chief executives and their spouses -- Our Country's Presidents(2013, 4th edition) and Our Country's First Ladies (2007) -- as well as the intrepid explorer Roy Chapman Andrews (Dragon Bones and Dinosaur Eggs, 2000).

Gr 5-9-Children will find this beautifully illustrated resource both eye-catching and informative. The presidents' stories, presented in chronological order, include stunning full-page replicas of official portraits, a fact box of important historical details during the presidency, additional prints-both color and black and white, diagrams, etc. The conversational text is clearly written and full of interesting facts about the men's personal lives, humorous incidents, political backgrounds, records, struggles, battles, successes, what they are most famous for, events that occurred during their administrations, and memorable quotes. Interspersed throughout are spreads that provide additional information on the executive branch of government, White House traditions such as the Easter egg roll, the first ladies, Christmas tree lighting, the vice-presidency, voting rights, campaign strategies and party politics, conventions, etc. Great for reports or personal interest, this resource will fill the bill for students, and please them as well. Interspersed are occasional double-page spreads about historical periods and related topics, such as the vice-presidency. It's easy to see that this edition of the title has been updated: there's a photo of Barack Obama on the cover, and he wrote the foreword. (In the 2005 volume, it was written by George Bush.) This exceedingly attractive offering is still chock-full of information, presented by veteran writer Bausum in such an inviting manner that children will enjoy paging through, even if there's no school report looming. Each president is introduced with a full-page portrait, and the other historic images and photos are excellent. The book begins with an introduction to the presidency, followed by an initial time line (continued at intervals throughout the book) that explains what was happening in the U.S. The sketches of the presidents range from one page (Franklin Pierce) to five pages (Franklin Roosevelt). Full of interesting tidbits as well as solid information, the entries are supplemented by spreads on topics such as polling and the 2008 election.
