School Library Journal Review
PreS-K-Big, friendly, cartoon bears experience a typical school day in this reassuring story. The cubs are dropped off by parents and wave good-bye. On the next spread, the school bell rings and the the eager students engage in activities including music, art, and learning to write their names. The bright, boldly colored illustrations, done in paint, pen and ink, and crayon, clearly tell the story and have just the right amout of detail for the audience. A wordless map of the school is included to familiarize children with where things are in the building. The pacing of the story is good, but the rhyme does seem forced in a few places. This is a good title to prepare children for this milestone in their lives.-Ellie Lease, Harford County Public Library, MD (c) Copyright 2014. Publisher's Weekly Review
In this addition to Blackstone and Harter's long-running Bear series, young bears with simple, bulky forms and heart-shaped faces model a typical day at school, which Blackstone describes in pleasing, declarative rhymes: "It's time for fresh air! The bears go outside./ They climb up the trees,/ they whoosh down the slide." Harter makes especially vibrant use of color and pattern: the bears draw on turquoise craft tables, and black-and-white patterns provide eye-catching accents, as the guiding tone offers encouragement for readers new to school. Kirkus Review
Blackstone's Bear and pals introduce children to a typical school day.Adorable bears, all of different hues and accessorized for differentiation, wave goodbye to their grown-ups and start their day: "The school bell rings and the bears go inside. / They hang up their coats and their school bags with pride." Music and math are the first subjects the bears tackle, then they have a snack: some sort of orange drink and a "bun"what appear to be frosted doughnuts with cherries on top. Literacy and lunchtime are next, followed by naps and recess. A craft project and storytime round out the day before dismissal. Blackstone's rhymes are sometimes roughsums/bun, prepared/bears, rest/stretch, follow/tomorrowwhich is a shame in a book that emphasizes emergent-literacy skills, but the scansion is spot-on. The final spread asks readers to show the "new bear" around on a map of the school drawn from above. The bears' school unrealistically comprises five rooms: a single classroom, a hall for meals, a room for naps, and two rooms the bears don't visita bathroom and an office. Harter's paint, pen-and-ink, and crayon illustrations feature bright colors and solid backgrounds so readers can focus on what the bears are doing at school, though their facial expressions are rather one-note.There are better offerings on the back-to-school shelf for easing those new to school into the routine; skip this one. Booklist Review
Arriving at school, bear cubs wave good-bye to their parents and head for their classroom, where they play music, do sums, and work on writing their names. After lunch, a nap, recess, and art, the school day ends with storytime. The clearly drawn forms, brilliant hues, and interesting details in the artwork are visually engaging, while the rhythmic, rhyming text guides young listeners through the day. An appended school map invites children to show the new bear around. Simplicity, color, and good cheer are hallmarks of Blackstone and Harter's Bear series. A fine choice for kids preparing for their first all-day school experience.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2014 Booklist
