Summary
Summary
When the mutilated body of a young woman is discovered in the Santa Monica Mountains, LAPD Detective Jessica Allen knows she's seen this before--two and a half years ago on the other side of the country.A sadistic serial killer has been operating undetected for a decade, preying on lone female drivers whose cars have broken down. The press dub the killer 'the Samaritan,' but with no leads--and a killer who leaves no traces--the police investigation quickly grinds to a halt. That's when Carter Blake shows up to volunteer his services. He's a skilled manhunter with an uncanny ability to predict the Samaritan's next moves. At first, Allen and her colleagues are suspicious. After all, their new ally shares some uncomfortable similarities to the man they're tracking. But as the Samaritan takes his slaughter to the next level, Blake must find a way to stop him . . . even if it means bringing his own past crashing down on top of him.

Publisher's Weekly Review
Despite a familiar plot line-the hunt to stop a serial killer-even jaded genre readers will be absorbed by Cross's second thriller featuring manhunter Carter Blake (after 2015's The Killing Season). The murderer has been dubbed the Samaritan for his pattern of offering to help stranded female motorists before torturing them and slitting their throats with a jagged blade. A landslide uncovers the corpses of three of his victims, including 22 year-old Kelly Boden. When Blake hears of the discovery, he heads to L.A. to join in the investigation, believing that he knows the killer, a former colleague in a shadowy military unit. That suspicion leads him to offer his services for free to Kelly's father, and his assistance is warily accepted by the LAPD detective on the case, Jessica Allen, who may herself have some past history with the killer. Cross makes the most of perspectives alternating among Blake, Allen, and the Samaritan, building up to a logical but surprising climax. Agent: Luigi Bonomi, LBA (U.K.). (Feb.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Kirkus Review
Carter Blake, the "locating consultant" who made such a splash in his debut (The Killing Season, 2015), returns to help locate a bad boy who's been awfully busy for an awfully long time. The first corpse reported to Detective Jessica Allen, LAPD, isn't that of Sarah Dutton, who disappeared from her wealthy father's home with the Porsche he'd given her, but that of her friend Kelly Boden, who drove the Porsche backwell, partway backfrom a wild party. The bodies of two other young women are discovered so soon thereafter that there's never any doubt that a serial killer is at work, abducting women, torturing them, and ritualistically killing them. The Samaritan, as he's swiftly dubbed by a TV reporter who's apparently getting information from an unauthorized source, seems to prey on women stuck on lonely roads who need a helping hand. How long has he been at it? Allen's research identifies at least two likely earlier victims. But these discoveries, disquieting as they are, are overshadowed by her much more disturbing memory of an unsolved murder she worked in Washington, D.C., before coming to LA six months ago, suggesting that the Samaritan has worked both coasts with a break of more than two years between killing sprees. Enter Blake with even more chilling news: the M.O. of all these murders links them both to the killing of Army Sgt. Willis Peterson in North Carolina and the 1997 slaughter of the Crozier family, almost certainly by Dean Crozier, the son whom there wasn't enough evidence to arresta son reported killed in Afghanistan in 2004. Just how long has the Samaritan been at it, how many victims has he claimed, and when will the killing end? Fans of Jeffery Deaverthat other thrill-master who can't resist piling on the climactic twists even as the lights are coming up and you're looking for your umbrellashould be enthralled. Booklist Review
A landslide in L.A. exposes the naked body of a young woman. She had been tortured before being killed by an unusual slashing of her throat. Soon two more bodies are found. Each resembles the first victim, and each died in the same way. LAPD Homicide Detective Jessica Allen thinks she has seen the distinctive throat cutting before, when she was a detective in Washington, D.C. In Florida, the enigmatic Carter Blake sees a TV news report on the murders, and he is certain that he has seen the killer's work. Soon, he's on a flight to L.A. to track down Crozier, a man he served with in a supersecret U.S. special-ops unit. His task is made dramatically more difficult by the murderous head of LAPD's SWAT team and a manipulative FBI agent. Of course, he ultimately succeeds, but it ain't easy; Blake and Allen both barely survive their encounters with the killer. There's plenty of action, but a heroic enigma tracking a homicidal enigma is a bit like unsalted potato chips.--Gaughan, Thomas Copyright 2015 Booklist
