K-Gr 2-Fans of Digby O'Day's unique British-tinged world will find themselves back in Digby's life in this second installment of the charming, retro-styled series. Digby and his best friend Percy (both dogs) find themselves behind the wheel of Digby's car on their way to a seaside getaway. A cheerful map of "Digby's World" helps acclimate readers to the different locations in the story. Much like in the first book, Digby's is a world that features a hybrid human/anthropomorphic animal population. When Percy discovers that celebrity movie star cat Peaches Meow is staying at the very same seaside resort, he morphs into the ultimate star-struck fan. Peaches Meow becomes the victim of a cat burglary (pun intended), and Digby and Percy suddenly find themselves in the midst of solving the crime. With short sentences, complementary images, and an interesting story line, this tale will keep newly emergent readers captivated and guessing what will happen next. VERDICT A silly British countryside romp complete with a movie star, a mystery, and a clever ending. A stellar addition to early chapter book collections and a must for all mystery, adventure, and car enthusiasts.-Amy M. Laughlin, Darien Library, CT © Copyright 2015. Dogs Digby and Percy return for another early chapter book (Digby O'Day in the Fast Lane), here tootling off in Digby's convertible to a seaside vacation at the Hotel Splendide, where they become embroiled in a diamond heist. The combination of cozy setting and dangerous adventure, all brought to life in a profusion of pencil, ink, and digital-collage illustrations, should keep readers engaged. (c) Copyright 2016. Kirkus Review
Following series opener Digby O'Day in the Fast Lane (2014), Hughes and Vulliamy's canine duo are off on another adventure, this time featuring a classy seaside hotel, a secret passage, a singing starlet with a taste for shiny jewels, and a pair of (feline) cat burglars. As before, there's an old-fashioned feel to both text and pictures. When Digby tells Percy about their upcoming trip, the smaller dog is troubled because the only dinner jacket he owns "belonged to my Uncle Gus [and it's] moth-eaten and has a couple of gravy stains." Soon enough they are on the road, and the plot rolls along briskly, if coincidentally, from a near miss with a large, dark car (license plate "Bad 2") to their ignominious arrival at the hotel and serendipitous rescue of a fellow beach walker. Next come the glamorous entrance of Peaches Meow, a robbery at the hotel, and, finally, a visit to a local home that includes a trip down through a tunnel to a smugglers' cave. Vignettes, single-, and double-page illustrations, created with pencil, ink, and digital collage, provide clues and amplify the mild humor. Emerging readers may nonetheless struggle with some of the sophisticated vocabulary and the unfamiliar setting. Smooth writing, appealing pictures, and (mostly) mild action create a pleasant enough package, but it's still likely to be a bit twee for some readers.
