He was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1944 & grew up there & in Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated from Michigan State University & received an M. F. A. in 1970 from the University of California at Irvine. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts & American Academy of Arts & Letters Award for Literature. He was also given the 1994 Rea Award. In 2001 he was awarded the PEN/Malamud prize. He made The New York Times Best Seller List for his title's Canada and Let Me Be Frank with You. He was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with his title, Let Me Be Frank With You.

The first novel in six years from Pulitzer Prize winner (for Independence Day) Ford is a tragic rural farrago composed of two awkwardly joined halves. In the late 1950s, in Great Falls, Mont., teenage twins Dell and Berner Parson have different concerns: Berner's is whether to run away with her boyfriend; Dell's is chess and beekeeping. Their comically mismatched parents-rakish, smalltime schemer Bev and brooding, Jewish Neeva-have problems beyond a joyless union. Bev's stolen beef scheme goes awry, leaving him owing his Cree Indian accomplices. In desperation he robs a bank, roping his wife into the crime, and Dell, peering back much later, chronicles every aspect of the intricate but misguided plan, which left his parent incarcerated and he and Berner alone. Berner runs away, and Dell ends up in the care of a shady family friend at a hunting lodge in Canada, living an even more barren and lonely existence than he had in Great Falls. The book's first half has the makings of a succinct rural tragedy, but Dell's inquisition of the past is so deliberate that it eventually moves from poignant to played out. The Canadian section has a mythic strangeness, but adds little, as Dell remains a passive witness to the foolhardy actions of adults. He and his twin sister, Berner, are left to forge their own futures while still reeling from the shock of their parents' desperate act. Berner, burning with resentment, takes off for the West Coast, while a family friend makes arrangements for Dell to hide in Canada. But what Dell discovers in Canada, while in the employ of a mysterious Harvard-educated American with a violent streak, is to take nothing for granted, for every pillar of the belief the world rests on may or may not be about to explode. Why Dell not only survives his traumatic adolescence but manages to thrive, while Berner, seemingly more worldly, succumbs to drink and a fractured existence is just one of the many questions Ford posits. In subdued, even flat, prose, Ford lays out the central mysteries of Dell's young life, and although the narrative voice here is neither as compelling nor as rich as that found in Ford's great Bascombe trilogy, devoted Ford fans will find that it resonates well beyond the page. Willa Cather once wrote that "a creative writer can do his best only with what lies within the range and character of his deepest sympathies." By that measure, and any other, Richard Ford is doing his very best in his extraordinary new novel, "Canada," his first book since "The Lay of the Land" six years ago. Here, Ford is clearly writing within the range and character of his deepest sympathies - in this case, from the point of view of an abandoned 15-year-old boy - and he's doing it with a level of linguistic mastery that is rivaled by few, if any, in American letters today. "Canada" opens in 1960 in Great Falls, Mont., a frontier town Ford has written about before, most notably in his affecting and largely underrated 1990 novel "Wildlife," which begins with this: "In the fall of 1960, when I was 16 and my father was for a time not working, my mother met a man named Warren Miller and fell in love with him." All that follows is told from the point of view of Joe Brinson, an older narrator looking back on the 16-year-old boy he'd been when the fragile equilibrium at his family's center was lost. This is an engaging voice: earnest without being morose; honest without being exhibitionistic; understated, humble and wise from years of trusting in questions more than in answers. But this voice, as successful as it is, pales in comparison to that of Dell Parsons, the protagonist of "Canada," another older narrator looking back on when his life, too, went astray in 1960 in Great Falls, Mont. Here are its opening lines: "First, I'll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders, which happened later. The robbery is the more important part, since it served to set my and my sister's lives on the courses they eventually followed. Nothing would make complete sense without that being told first." On a purely plot-hungry basis, turning the page seems the only thing to do, but - as is so often the case with the fiction of Richard Ford - what actually happens in the story feels secondary, or at best equal, to the language itself. In the hands of a lesser writer, this can create problems: the prose begins to feel self-indulgent, written not to illuminate any truths but to please the writer, and in the process, story itself is lost and the reader is left behind. But "Canada" is blessed with two essential strengths in equal measure - a mesmerizing story driven by authentic and fully realized characters, and a prose style so accomplished it is tempting to read each sentence two or three times before being pulled to the next. The novel begins with the Parsons family moving to Great Falls in 1956, but the trouble begins in the spring of 1960 when Dell's father, Bev Parsons, leaves the Air Force at age 37. Bev sees Great Falls "as a place where he thought he could get ahead - even without a social life. He said he hoped to join the Masons." What he joins instead is a long line of men through the ages who are trying to find out just where they belong. He takes work as a new-car salesman, then a usedcar salesman, then a real estate agent selling ranch land and farms, "something he admitted he knew nothing about but was signed up to take a course on in the basement of the Y.M.C.A." Around this time Bev starts spearheading the local trade in stolen beef, which ultimately leads to the bank robbery we learn of in the first paragraph, a calamitous event that leads us ever deeper into the life of Dell Parsons: twin brother of Berner, son of Neeva Kamper, a boy interested in chess and keeping bees who is very much looking forward to starting high school in the fall. The Nixon and Kennedy debates are not far off, and the only real shadow here is that Dell and Berner and their mother don't feel they really belong in this town. That, and the fact that the twins can read the emotional weather in their small house. "My sister and I could easily see why my mother would've been attracted to Bev Parsons: big, plank shouldered, talkative, funny, forever wanting to please anybody who came in range. He must've somehow just appreciated all that, sensed she had a subtler mind than his, but that he could please her, which made him happy. It was to his good credit that he looked beyond their physical differences to the heart of things human, which I admired even if it wasn't in our mother to notice." DELL'S voice here - nonjudgmental, insightful, laconic and slightly melancholy but at ease with the language he's using to plumb his memory - is the central strength of this remarkable novel. Its finely wrought sentences alone are worth the price of admission, but they are also in constant service to the story of the Parsons family. "The world doesn't usually think about bank robbers as having children - though plenty must. But the children's story - which mine and my sister's is - is ours to weigh and apportion and judge as we see fit. ... Ruskin wrote that composition is the arrangement of unequal things. Which means it's for the composer to determine what's equal to what, and what matters more and what can be set to the side of life's hurtling passage onward." We are quite fortunate that the remembered story of Dell Parsons is composed, through Richard Ford, by Dell himself, now a teacher in his 60s. Not only are we served abstract gems ("the nervous American intensity for something else"), we are also anchored in young Dell's experience by concrete details like this description of the shack he comes to live in in Saskatchewan, the guest of a union-hating radical anti-authoritarian named Arthur Remlinger: "There was almost no room for me, only the iron cot I slept on and the one that had been reserved for Berner, and the 'kitchen room,' with the bumpy red linoleum and a single fluorescent ceiling ring and a two-burner hot plate where I boiled tar-smelling pump water in a pan to make my bath at night." It is Dell's boiling of pump water for a bath, his search for a school, his trying to make a normal life for himself among dangerous adult chaos that is so gratifyingly heart-rending about his story. "Canada" is a tale of what happens when we cross certain lines and can never go back. It is an examination of the redemptive power of articulated memory, and it is a masterwork by one of our finest writers working at the top of his form. 'First, I'll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders.' "Children know normal better than anyone," says Dell Parsons, the narrator of Richard Ford's luminous and utterly forlorn new novel, and certainly Dell when he was a child knew far better than most what a normal life, especially a normal American life, is likely to turn out to be. The opening sentences of the book, which are bound to go straight into the collective literary memory, tell us what he, and we, are in for: "First, I'll tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then about the murders, which happened later." The year is 1960, and the Parsons family father Bev, mother Neeva, and 15-year-old Dell and his twin sister, Berner are settled, just about, in the city of Great Falls, Montana, having moved there four years previously. Bev, a good ol' boy from Alabama, had been an air force bombardier who saw action in the Philippines and Osaka, "where they rained down destruction on the earth". Having left the service, he works as a car salesman and then gets involved in a beef-smuggling racket with a local band of Indians. Neeva, short for Geneva, "a tiny, intense, bespectacled woman with unruly brown hair, vestiges of which ran down her jawline", is Jewish, and has literary pretensions, or longings, at least. She and Bev are an archetypical American married couple of the time, who just happen to become bank robbers. "While from a distance," Dell writes, "it may seem that our parents were merely not made for one another, it was more true that when our mother married our father, it betokened a loss, and her life changed forever and not in a good way as she surely must've believed." At a certain level, and although Dell specifically denies it, Canada is a study of that sense of loss, which was, and is, pervasive in American life consider today's Tea Party movement and its members' plaintive wish to "take back" the country from the mysterious forces that somehow stole it from them. The Parsons, man and wife, are not particularly unhappy together, just discontent and uncertain, so that Dell can honestly say that to him and his sister "life in our house seemed normal". Normal: there is that word again. Dell writes of his father that when he came back from the war in 1945 "he may have been in the grip of some great, unspecified gravity, as many GIs were. He spent the rest of his life wrestling with that gravity, puzzling to stay positive and afloat, making bad decisions that truly seemed good for a moment, but ultimately misunderstanding the world he'd returned home to and having that misunderstanding become his life." The portraits of Bev and Neeva are masterly. These are perfectly ordinary people who get dragged down by the force of that "great, unspecified gravity" and, still gamely in pursuit of "normality", turn to desperate measures to solve the difficulties of their lives. Inevitably, the beef-smuggling scheme goes wrong, the Indians threaten serious violence, until Bev and Neeva can see no way out of their predicament other than to rob a bank and use the proceeds to pay off their ill-gotten debts. That plan also goes awry, of course, and one day the police arrive and the couple are put in handcuffs and taken away, with no immediate arrangements in place for the care of the twins. The chapters devoted to the arrest of the parents and how the children cope with the calamity form the beating heart of the book. What makes these pages so powerful is the unrelenting control that Ford exerts over the style and pace of the writing. "You'd think," Dell observes, "that to watch your parents be handcuffed, called bank robbers to their faces and driven away to jail, and for you to be left behind might make you lose your mind. It might make you run the rooms of your house in a frenzy and wail and abandon yourself to despair, and for nothing to be right again. And for someone that might be true. But you don't know how you'll act in such a situation until it happens. I can tell you most of that is not what took place, though of course life was changed forever." It took this reader a little time to become accustomed to the measured, downbeat tone of Canada. In the superb trilogy of novels centred on the character of Frank Bascombe The Sportswriter, Independence Day and The Lay of the Land Ford developed an idiosyncratically playful, slyly dandified voice that owed as much to the great European stylists as it did to Emerson and Twain. In this new book, he writes with deliberate flatness, eschewing stylistic flourishes except when describing North American landscapes so that Dell speaks in the cadences of a permanently damaged spirit. Listening to him, sentence by careful sentence, is like watching a car-crash survivor making his way along a hospital corridor, step by careful step. His voice, at once muffled and clear, is remarkably resonant, and devastating in its directness, as when he almost casually describes how he and Berner engage in a brief bout of consolatory incest, or when he remarks of his father, "In truth, we were never close, although I loved him as if we were." In the middle, the book divides abruptly, and at first it seems that there are two novels here that have been spliced into one. This is a feat of great technical daring, which Ford just about pulls off. As part two opens "Life-changing events often don't seem what they are" Bev and Neeva are in jail awaiting trial, Berner has walked off into the wide American afternoon, and Dell is being driven by a friend of his mother's, Mildred Remlinger, across the border to Canada, where he will be left in the care, if that is the word, of Mildred's brother Arthur, who owns a run-down hotel in Fort Royal, a dingy town outside Saskatchewan. Before he encounters Arthur, however, Dell finds himself left to the untender mercies of Arthur's henchman Charley Quarters. This pair are extraordinary creations, at once enigmatic and vividly alive on the page. Arthur, handsome, finely dressed, urbane, is a man with a past who knows that "bad things were coming to him". "Absence," Dell tells us, "was his companion in life," and he needs Dell to be for him a "special son" who will "do what sons do for their fathers: bear witness that they're substantial, that they're not hollow, not ringing absences". In contrast to his boss, Charley Quarters is a feral creature, a hunter who shoots anything that moves, dyes his hair and on occasion wears lipstick. Here we seem to be in the territory of Robert Stone or Cormac McCarthy, or on its borders, at least. However, the inevitable violence when it comes is presented in the same low-key manner that is maintained throughout the book. "I remember very well how fast the shooting and the killing took place. There were no dramatics to it, as in movies. It happened at once almost as if it didn't happen. Only then someone's dead." These violent acts are of far less moment to Dell than the struggle he must engage in to hold himself apart from the mayhem and not allow his spirit to be damaged by it. Here, once again, we hear the enduring refrain: "Through all these memorable events, normal life was what I was seeking to preserve for myself." But what, by now, would constitute normal life? Canada is a superlatively good book, richly imagined and beautifully fashioned. Although it is too early to do so, one is tempted to acclaim it a masterpiece. It catches movingly the grinding loneliness at the heart of American life of life anywhere. As the narrative makes its measured progress, the sadness steadily accumulates, a weightless silt that gets under the eyelids. The final encounter at the close of the book between Dell and Berner is one of the most tenderly drawn scenes in modern literature, and could only have been written by a writer of Richard Ford's empathy, insight and technical mastery.

A great American novel by the Pulitzer Prizewinning author. This is Ford's first novel since concluding the Frank Bascombe trilogy, which began with The Sportswriter (1986), peaked with the prize-winning Independence Day (1995) and concluded with The Lay of the Land (2006). That series was for Ford what the Rabbit novels were for Updike, making this ambitious return to long-form fiction seem like something of a fresh start, but also a thematic culmination. Despite its title, the novel is as essentially all-American as Independence Day. Typically for Ford, the focus is as much on the perspective (and limitations) of its protagonist as it is on the issues that the narrative addresses. The first-person narrator is Dell Parsons, a 15-year-old living in Montana with his twin sister when their parents--perhaps inexplicably, perhaps inevitably--commit an ill-conceived bank robbery. Before becoming wards of the state, the more willful sister runs away with her boyfriend, while Dell is taken across the border to Canada, where he will establish a new life for himself after crossing another border, from innocent bystander to reluctant complicity. The first half of the novel takes place in Montana and the second in Canada, but the entire narrative is Dell's reflection, 50 years later, on the eve of his retirement as a teacher. As he ruminates on character and destiny, and ponders "how close evil is to the normal goings-on that have nothing to do with evil," he also mediates between his innocence as an uncommonly nave teenager and whatever wisdom he has gleaned through decades of experience. Dell's perspective may well be singular and skewed, but it's articulate without being particularly perceptive or reflective. And it's the only one we have. In a particularly illuminating parenthetical aside, he confesses, "I was experiencing great confusion about what was happening, having had no experience like this in my life. I should not be faulted for not understanding what I saw." At the start of the novel's coda, when Dell explains that he teaches his students "books that to me seem secretly about my young life," he begins the list with The Heart of Darkness and The Great Gatsby. The life of 15-year-old Dell Parsons is thrown into chaos when he is sent from Montana to live in Canada after his parents are arrested for bank robbery. The novel's first half circles his parents' disgrace, examining it from so many angles that the cumulative effect becomes a bit monotonous. Dell's struggle to find himself amid the beauty and dangers of rural Canada is more compelling. Holter Graham's youthful voice, fitting for the boy's first-person narration, perfectly captures Dell's mixture of innocence, confusion, curiosity, and guilt. VERDICT This program should appeal to those drawn to unusual coming-of-age tales.
