Thirteen-year-old Lizzie's favorite place in the world is her uncle's cabin. Uncle Davy's renovated schoolhouse cabin, filled with antiques and on the edge of the Adirondacks, disconnected from the rest of the world, is like something out of a fairy tale. And an escape from reality is exactly what Lizzie needs. Life hasn't been easy for Lizzie lately. Her father abandoned their family, leaving Lizzie with her oftentimes irresponsible mother. Now, her mom has cancer and being unable to care for Lizzie during her chemotherapy, Mom asks her where she'd like to spend the summer. The answer is simple: Uncle Davy's cabin.
Lizzie loves her uncle's home for many reasons, but the main one is Matias, Uncle Davy's neighbor and Lizzie's best friend. Matias has proportionate dwarfism, but that doesn't stop him and Lizzie from wandering in the woods. Every day they go to their favorite nook where Matias paints with watercolors and Lizzie writes. Until one day when Matias never arrives.
When news breaks about two escaped convicts from the nearby prison, Lizzie fears the worst. And when Uncle Davy goes missing, too, Lizzie knows she's the only one who knows this area of woods well enough to save them. Armed with her trusted Keppy survival book, Lizzie sets out into the wilds of the Adirondacks, proving just how far she'll go to save the people she loves.

Beth Kephart's first book was a National Book Award finalist & was named a best book of the year by "Salon," the "Philadelphia Inquirer," & others. Kephart has won a 2000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the 1998 Leeway grant, & the 1997 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts top grant for fiction. Her essays & articles have appeared in magazine nationwide. She lives in Pennsylvania.

Lizzie's mom has been diagnosed with cancer and needs treatment, and she asks her 13-year-old daughter where she wants to spend the summer. Lizzie chooses to be with her uncle Davy at his renovated schoolhouse cabin in the Adirondacks. Despite her worry over her mother, she is excited to spend time with Uncle Davy, a television star who specializes in antiques, and her friend Matias, an El Salvadoran boy who suffers from proportionate dwarfism and paints beautiful watercolors. Addressing a mysterious listener directly, Lizzie relates the unexpected events that unfold: the kidnapping of her friend and uncle by two convicts escaped from the nearby prison, the steps Lizzie takes to rescue them, and the terrible aftermath of the crime. Lizzie is an honest, heroic character who is fascinated by biology and the world around her. Kephart's novel features passages told in stirring poetic language and with a sophisticated, descriptive tone: "The shadows between the trees beyond the lake are not always bears or wolves or rats or snakes. The end of the world isn't always the end." This is a victim impact statement. Offered right here, from this bed, in this room, in this house, to you. Readers immediately learn that the victim is thirteen-year-old Lizzie, but the precise circumstances that led her to this place and the person shes addressing are unknown. What is known is that while her mother was undergoing radiation treatment for cancer, Lizzie chose to spend the summer in the wilderness of the Adirondacks with her beloved Uncle Davy and her friend Matias, who has proportional dwarfism. But circumstances force other choices, and the idyllic mountains hide a horror that readers reconstruct from Lizzies ruminations, which appear to be scattered but are in reality carefully constructed clues. In addition, theres the complexity of each character to unpack. Davy isnt defined solely by his near-remote existence, his estrangement from Lizzies mother, or his expertise in antiques, just as Matias is more than his artistic ability, his Salvadoran culture, and his medical condition. Readers must piece together these characters hidden strengths and weaknesses as Lizzie hints at their many parts in much the same way she foreshadowsbut not until the denouement reveals preciselythe details of her ordeal. Lizzie treasures the time she spends not only with Davy but also his neighbor Matias, an immigrant from El Salvador with proportionate dwarfism. But when Matias fails to meet up with Lizzie one afternoon, it quickly becomes clear that not all is well there's been a prison break nearby, and the authorities believe Matias has been kidnapped. Lizzie takes it upon herself to find him. With urgency embedded in every paragraph, Kephart's latest brims with deep characterizations and evocative settings. In a direct address to the reader early on, Lizzie shares that what follows is a victim impact statement. Her narration weaves forward and back, illuminating past actions that shade current experiences, and widening the lens of the story to include the escaped convicts and their outside-world accomplice. While Lizzie may seem at times preternaturally wise, the connections drawn as she examines motives from various parties are thought-provoking. By turns a mystery, a thriller, and an adventure, this richly woven story will provide much for readers to tease apart long after it's finished. Gr 5-8-When told to choose her summer adventure, Lizzie chooses her favorite place in the world-her Uncle Davy's mountain cabin and time with her best friend Matias. She would rather stay home with her mother, but her mother's cancer diagnosis and treatments means she really needs to be away for the summer. Everything begins as usual-cooking with her uncle, who works as a celebrity antiques dealer, and enjoying picnics and long conversations with Matias, who has a rare condition that causes a form of dwarfism. Then the unexpected happens. Two prisoners escape from a nearby facility and kidnap Matias. When Lizzie finds her friend missing and only one of his canes, she sets out to find him. Her worried uncle goes in search of Lizzie and Matias and soon, he too disappears. Told as a victim's impact statement, Lizzie's conversational tone to an unknown listener whose identity we discover near the end of the book relates her actions, her emotions, and her anger about what happened. Lizzie is articulate and gutsy. Kephart is at her best in this fast-paced yet introspective novel for younger tweens and teens. Choices and their unpredictable aftermaths form the backbone of Kephart's (This Is the Story of You, 2016, etc.) latest.White, 13-year-old Lizzie's choice to spend the summer in the Adirondacks with Uncle Davy while her mother undergoes cancer treatment is simple. There, she can also visit her "all-year-round friend" Matias, a Salvadoran boy with proportionate dwarfism who's a talented watercolor painter. But when Matias is kidnapped by escapees from a nearby prison, Lizzie makes a harder choice: to rescue him, braving 6 million acres of wilderness alone. Lizzie's adventure unravels in an epic victim-impact statement, which she addresses to a faceless visitor: Caroline, the kidnappers' accomplice. Angry, frantic, insightful, and vividly lyrical, Lizzie's voice densely weaves together the disorienting landscape; memories of her absent, narcissistic father; and Matias' stories of the beauty and danger of the country he fled. Framed in Lizzie's elegies to his "myths" and "light," Matias himself seems more akin to a legendary figure than a person, which lessens the emotional impact of his disappearance despite Lizzie's distress. As Caroline's part in several characters' fates emerges, occasional sympathy for Caroline conflicts with the irreversible consequences of her choices. Readers, like Lizzie, will ponder the possibility of forgiveness; there are no easy answers, but the book ends on a hopeful note. Sulit's illustrations of Matias' postcards appear in full color throughout.Thought-provoking and intenserecommended for patient readers.
