Summary
Summary
Nina Granville believes her business trip to Alaska will give her a short respite from the merry-go-round that came with her engagement to Congressman Terrence Donnelly. But instead of allowing her the peace she craves, Nina's getaway from the public eye means that no one witnesses her abduction into a very cold hell.
Taken by a mountain man who calls himself Baer and then transported to a remote cabin surrounded by nothing but frozen wilderness, Nina descends into a nightmare of terror, privation, and bitter cold. Nina's privileged life did not prepare her for imprisonment at the hands of this survivalist trapper. If she is to live--and to escape--Nina realizes she must do it on her own.
Undaunted and with startling determination, Nina pits herself against her captor, her fear, and nature itself in a battle for her life--but can she win against such deadly opponents?

Publisher's Weekly Review
After Nina Granville, the courageous heroine of this searing thriller from Russell (St. Nick), is abducted from the streets of Fairbanks, Alaska, she expects to return to her comfortable, privileged life as soon as her family pays the ransom. Her captor, the hulking mountain man who calls himself Baer, has cut off her ring finger and sent it along with the ransom note to show he's serious. Once Nina is caged in his remote cabin, Baer breaks the news that she's his new "wife" just before he beats and rapes her. This goes on interminably and inexorably, while Nina absorbs the bleakly encouraging diary of Elese Martin, a previous captive, and learns to be pragmatically cold-blooded about her own chances to survive-and escape. Meanwhile, Sgt. Evan Hamilton of the Seward Police and Elese's husband, Greg, attempt to come to the rescue. Nina's transformation from victim to avenger is painful to watch, but it's brutally convincing. (Oct.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
Kirkus Review
A golden girl snatched from an Alaska vacation battles her monstrous captor to survive.Three years ago, geologist Greg Martin's bride, Elese, vanished from the streets of Seward during their honeymoon. The search for her went nowhere, perhaps because Sgt. Evan Hamilton decided that her husband, who'd already been named in a criminal complaint by his first wife, had probably done away with her for the insurance he'd expeditiously taken out. Nor is Hamilton about to change his mind when fundraiser Nina Granville disappears from Fairbanks under very similar circumstances; even when Greg comes forward and offers to help, Hamilton is still suspicious. This time, though, there's a much more concerted push to find Nina, who recently became engaged to charming, handsome, wealthy presidential hopeful Congressman Terrence Donnelly. The Donnelly family offers a substantial reward for Nina's safe return, and Sgt. Cody Wood, the Congressman's deputy chief of staff, beats the bushes looking for her. But all in vain; Nina's been carried off by Elese's kidnapper, a survivalist trapper who calls himself Baer, who carries the women he abducts off to the back of beyond and treats them as breed animals. Beaten, caged, and raped, Nina struggles to adapt to the demands of her unspeakable situation. Her determination to escape is fed by her discovery of a journal kept by Elese, "her secret sister," and sharpened by the realization that she's pregnant. Russell (Political Suicide, 2003, etc.) handles Nina's kidnapping, imprisonment, and painfully growing resolve with matter-of-fact mastery. Only the surprisingly long last movement, which slowly prepares and releases a final thunderbolt, is likely to divide readers. Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist Review
Elese Martin disappears in Alaska while on her honeymoon, and her husband, Greg, is the prime suspect. But the case goes nowhere, and Elese is never found. Three years later, another woman, Nina Granville, goes missing. Nina's fiancé is the political wunderkind of the Donnelly family, a Kennedy-like clan, and a multimillion-dollar reward spurs a massive search, also to no avail. The reader learns early on that the kidnapper is an Alaskan survivalist who calls himself Baer and is convinced that there is an upcoming nuclear winter, which he is determined to survive. The suspense comes from worrying about Nina (a replacement for Elese, after her death). We learn what happened to Elese from a secret journal Nina finds in the cage where she, like Elese before her, is kept. It is the journal that keeps Nina sane while she plots escape both from her captor and from the unrelenting cold of the Alaskan autumn. This unusual thriller offers a fascinating look at survivalists and the wilderness of our fiftieth state as well as being a truly gripping page-turner in the manner of Tim Johnston's Descent (2015).--Alesi, Stacy Copyright 2015 Booklist
