San Francisco homicide detective Frost Easton, the hero of this taut crime novel from Thriller Award-winner Freeman (Spilled Blood), looks into the death of Brynn Lansing, a salesperson at Macy's. One night, while stuck in traffic on the Bay Bridge, a panicked Brynn got out of her car and took a fatal plunge into the bay. Two months earlier, another young woman died under bizarre circumstances. Both women were patients of psychologist Francesca "Frankie" Stein and underwent a controversial treatment to alter traumatic memories. As Frost and Frankie investigate, the killer's carefully orchestrated plans put Frankie, her practice, and more patients in jeopardy. Stymied by the doctor's reticence and refusal to discuss her patients, Frost must wait for the next victim's breakdown and descent into madness to try and catch a ruthless, increasingly cruel assailant. Freeman's command of pace and plot is assured, his prose artfully layered with the sinister and serene. This one will keep you guessing, but read it with the lights on. San Francisco homicide inspector Frost Easton finds himself getting personally involved in a case about memories or, more precisely, the lack of memories. Local psychiatrist Francesca Stein has achieved dubious success with her controversial therapy, which involves changing a patient's bad memories in order to help them get through phobias, PTSD, and other fears. When three young women all patients of Dr. Stein seem to lose their sanity out of nowhere, Frost suspects that the doc is not the only one able to get into their heads. Frost has bad memories of his own he'd like to erase, as does Lucy, a young woman who may be the next victim of the Night Bird. There are several unsavory former patients who could be potential suspects, but what would motivate them? And how, exactly, are they able to manipulate these women? In his latest stand-alone thriller, Freeman (Goodbye to the Dead, 2016) once again shows a slick knack for creating enough tension without relying too heavily on gore just the right amount of nastiness that will not scare away more-genteel thriller readers.--Vnuk, Rebecca Copyright 2017 Booklist
