The same feisty voice and witty apercus readers fell in love with in A Is for Alibi permeate the Kinsey stories. Those in the And Me section trace a remarkable voyage, from anger to understanding, from pain to forgiveness. They take us into a troubled family, dysfunctional as most families are, each in their own way, but Grafton's telling is sensitive, delicate, and ultimately, loving. Enriching the way we see Kinsey and know Sue, these stories are deeply affecting.

Author Notes
Sue Grafton was born in Louisville, Kentucky on April 24, 1940. She received a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Louisville in 1961. Her first novel Keziah Dane was published in 1967. Her second novel, The Lolly-Madonna War, was published in 1969 and she adapted it into a screenplay. After that movie was released in 1973, she worked intermittently writing for television. A series she created, Nurse, ran for two seasons on CBS in the early 1980s.
Her writing career took off when A Is for Alibi was published in 1982 and received the Mysterious Stranger Award. This was the beginning of the Kinsey Millhone Mystery series. B Is for Burglar won the Shamus and Anthony Awards and C Is for Corpse won the Anthony Award. She also received the Cartier Diamond Dagger, the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Bouchercon, and the Ross Macdonald Literary Award. She died from cancer on December 28, 2017 at the age of 77.

The larger "Kinsey" part of this collection consists of nine stories that feature Grafton's durable private detective Kinsey Millhone doing what she does best: solving crimes and delighting readers, albeit in an abbreviated format that relies more on quick twists of plot than depth of character. Judy Kaye, who has been narrating the series from the start, does her usual, spot-on job of capturing the sharply observant sleuth in all her moods-from snarky and suspicious to wistful. It's the "Me" section of the collection that presents a surprise: 13 linked semi-autobiographical stories, written after the death of Grafton's mother that follow the life of a woman named Kit Blue, from her youth as the resentful, guilt-ridden child of alcoholic parents to her late 20s, when she receives a letter from her father that helps her make peace with the past. Kaye's rendition of these stories is flawless. Her Kit even sounds like a young Kinsey Millhone, sharing the same suspicious outlook, the same reaction to disappointment and-on rare occasions-to happiness. A Marian Wood Book/Putnam hardcover. *Starred Review* What could be better, while waiting for the twenty-third mystery in Grafton's alphabet series, than this revelatory collection of stories featuring both Grafton's alter ego, PI Kinsey Millhone, and the author herself? The volume includes 9 stories with Kinsey as protagonist (8 were published in 1991 in a very limited edition for family and friends); 13 short-short stories about Kit Blue, a younger version of Grafton; an introduction; and an essay, which bridges the two sections of the book, about the development of the private-eye mystery. In the Kit Blue stories, Grafton lays bare the pain of growing up with an alcoholic mother who died too young of cancer yet also credits her mystery writer and lawyer father (also alcoholic) and mystery-reading mother for making her the writer she became. Readers are likely to revel most in the wonderfully concise Kinsey stories, 2 of which, The Parker Shotgun and A Poison That Leaves No Trace, are award winners. Also especially intriguing are The Lying Game, written for Land's End's fortieth anniversary catalog in 2003, and Falling off the Roof, in which members of a mystery book club take their passion for murder beyond the printed page. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: To whet fans' appetites for W Is for . . . , the Kinsey Millhone mystery coming in 2013, Grafton offers a selection of Millhone and Kit Blue short stories. After all these years, Joyce Carol Oates can still give me the creeps. And the wellspring of terror she taps in DADDY LOVE (Mysterious Press/Grove/ Atlantic, $24) was recently brought home to the entire country - a child's fear of losing a parent and a parent's fear of losing a child. Five-year-old Robbie Whitcomb lives one form of that nightmare when he's snatched from the parking lot of a mall in Ypsilanti, Mich., by a whiskered man who attacks the boy's mother and drives over her in his van, leaving her a "pitiful broken thing." Oates replays that traumatic event over and over in her opening chapters, leaving it almost reluctantly to shift our attention to the man who has kidnapped Robbie and will savagely mistreat the "bright chattery happy child" over the next six years. Born Chester Czechi, this charismatic monster calls himself Chester Cash when he's working the country circuit as an itinerant preacher. But when he's hunting his victims and carrying them off to his remote farm in rural New Jersey, he's Daddy Love, a stern but devoted father to the succession of "sons" he keeps enslaved until they lose their charm. ("Twelve was already too old" and "13 was repellent.") Oates is a mind-reader who writes psychological horror stories about seriously disturbed minds, and it's hard to tear your eyes away from her grimly detailed portrait of Daddy Love. But her insights into nice, ordinary people - the kind of people Robbie's parents used to be, before their son was stolen - are no less incisive. Even as their marriage falls apart, Whit and Dinah Whitcomb remain sympathetic characters, hanging on to their humanity while slowly going to pieces. Oates's subtle art really takes hold, though, once Robbie (now called Gideon) turns 8 years old. Believing the boy to be sufficiently brainwashed, Daddy Love allows him to attend elementary school. But by the time he reaches what his captor calls "the bittersweet age" of 11 and is in the sixth grade, Gideon reveals a "striking" artistic talent. He also has the intelligence to realize that he may soon be joining the other "sons" who disappeared before they reached puberty. Oates has more knives to throw before bringing this harrowing tale to a close - but she saves the sharpest one for the very last page. The celebrated graphic novelist Warren Ellis has a terrific way with words. Many of the best ones in GUN MACHINE (Mulholland Books/Little, Brown, $25.99) can't be shared here, and neither can some of the book's extraordinarily violent descriptions. But good is good, and Ellis is a seriously good writer with a seriously wicked imagination. His novel is rather coyly presented as a formulaic police procedural, opening with a deadly shootout in a Lower Manhattan tenement. But it lurches off the rails when Detective John Tallow punches through an apartment wall to discover a cache of some 200 guns ritualistically displayed in symbolic patterns. ("A killer's temple" is what it looks like to Tallow, "a place of worship") More amazing, each of these weapons - from an 1836 flintlock pistol to the Bulldog .44 handgun owned by Son of Sam - has been retrofitted and used to commit a more recent murder. But that's only the bare bones of the plot, which Ellis proceeds to adorn with vivid sights, like the property office in the Bronx that houses "the grave goods of the unavenged dead of New York," and fully fleshed characters, including a serial killer who thinks he's living in oldenday Mannahatta and invites us to share his dark, disturbing visions. Sue Grafton is getting perilously near the end of her alphabet mysteries featuring Kinsey Millhone, so maybe KINSEY AND ME: Stories (Marian Wood/Putnam, $27.95) will take the edge off her fans' early withdrawal symptoms. The voice of a young and frisky Kinsey rings out in the nine early stories (all but one written between 1986 and 1991) that make up the better part of this collection. The collected short cases of Kinsey Millhone, plus a substantial bonus that wasn't included when the stories were originally published in a limited edition in 1991. The two qualities that distinguish Grafton (V is for Vengeance, 2011, etc.) from her competitors are amply on display here. Her Santa Teresa shamus is beyond question the most likable of all private eyes, and she never writes the same story twice--except when she recycles an ancient trick for telling the difference between an inveterate liar and his truth-telling brother in "The Lying Game." "Full Circle" is a routine account of how Kinsey tracked down the man who shot the driver who was cutting Kinsey off on the freeway. But "Non Sung Smoke" works surprising variations on its fatal drug scam, and "Long Gone" and "A Little Missionary Work" cap their tales of embezzlement and kidnapping with nifty final twists. "Falling Off the Roof" and "A Poison That Leaves No Trace" work impressively different changes on the clients who suspect their loved ones were murdered. The seriocomic "Between the Sheets" is a fast-paced search for the corpse that vanished from the bed of his lover's daughter. And the best of these tales, "The Parker Shotgun," combines the ingenuity of Agatha Christie and the compassion of Ross MacDonald. The bonus is a cycle of 13 slight but piercingly sensitive vignettes about Kit Blue, an autobiographical figure Grafton used to explore her conflicted feelings about her alcoholic parents in the years before Kinsey came on the scene to tilt her world toward felony and set it reassuringly in order. Kinsey Millhone, PI, captures vengeful murderers, exposes elaborate scams, and outsmarts the criminals in her usual witty, lovable way in nine stories written between 1986 and 1991 and first privately published in a limited edition of 300 copies. These tales are every bit as engaging to read as Grafton's (U Is for Undertow) full-length novels. Grafton's humor shines through in every story, particularly in "The Lying Game," which was written for the 40th anniversary of the Land's End catalog. The second section of this collection features the character of Kit Blue as the author herself, writing a fictionalized history of her own difficulties growing up as the child of alcoholic parents. Readers will also appreciate Grafton's thoughts on writing short stories, contained in the foreword, as well as the introduction in which she explains how the character of Kinsey came to her mind as her "alter-ego."
