Summary
The stakes have never been higher: when DNA evidence frees a sadistic killer, defense attorney Mickey Haller and LAPD Detective Harry Bosch must put him behind bars before he strikes again.
Longtime defense attorney Mickey Haller is recruited to change stripes and prosecute the high-profile retrial of a brutal child murder. After 24 years in prison, convicted killer Jason Jessup has been exonerated by new DNA evidence. Haller is convinced Jessup is guilty, and he takes the case on the condition that he gets to choose his investigator, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Together, Bosch and Haller set off on a case fraught with political and personal danger. Opposing them is Jessup, now out on bail, a defense attorney who excels at manipulating the media, and a runaway eyewitness reluctant to testify after so many years.
With the odds and the evidence against them, Bosch and Haller must nail a sadistic killer once and for all. If Bosch is sure of anything, it is that Jason Jessup plans to kill again.
Author Notes
Michael Connelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 21, 1956. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1980 where he majored in journalism and minored in creative writing. After graduation, he worked at newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, specializing in the crime beat. In 1986, he interviewed survivors of a plane crash with two other reporters and the magazine story subsequently written on the crash was on the short list for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. This story led to a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times. After three years there, he began writing his first novel.
His first novel, The Black Echo, was published in 1992 and won the Edgar Award for best first novel. He is the author of the Harry Bosch series, the Jack McEvoy series, and the Mickey Haller series. He has won numerous awards including the Anthony Award, Macavity Award, Shamus Award, Dilys Award, Nero Award, Barry Award, Ridley Award, Maltese Falcon Award (Japan), .38 Caliber Award (France), Grand Prix Award (France), Premio Bancarella Award (Italy), and the Pepe Carvalho Award (Spain).

Connelly's new thriller features two of his series heroes-the wily defense attorney Mickey Haller and his half-brother, LAPD detective Harry Bosch. This time Haller is working the other side of the courtroom, as a special independent prosecutor trying to keep a very nasty child molester and killer behind bars, with Bosch doing his legwork. As we've seen in The Brass Verdict, the author has Haller narrating his chapters, while the Bosch-centered sections are told in the third person. For the former, Peter Giles has developed a breezy, fast-paced vocal approach, while the detective's process is presented in a tougher, no frills manner. Additional characters are provided their own unique voices, including the smooth-talking district attorney, the arrogant villain, Haller's icy-but-melting former wife, and a brave but wavering witness to the crime. Not only is the production highly entertaining, the package is particularly generous, offering an additional two CDs containing unabridged MP3-format versions of The Reversal and the previous Haller-Bosch match, The Brass Verdict, also read by Giles. *Starred Review* Connelly may be our most versatile crime writer. His Harry Bosch series has taken the hard-boiled cop novel to a new level of complexity, both in its portrayal of the hero's inner life and in Connelly's ability to intertwine landscape and meaning. His Mickey Haller novels, on the other hand, starring the maverick lawyer who uses his Lincoln Town Car as an office, are testaments to the sublime architecture of plot. With the crime novel now commonly rubbing elbows with literary fiction, it sometimes seems that pure story has become a forgotten stepchild. In his Haller novels, Connelly reminds us how satisfying it can be to follow the path of a well-constructed plot. So it is here, in the third Haller novel, which finds the antiestablishment attorney accepting an unlikely offer: a one-time gig as a prosecutor, retrying a case in which a killer's 24-year-old conviction has been overturned on the basis of DNA. Taking second chair will be Haller's ex-wife, the formidable Maggie, with Harry Bosch (identified in The Brass Verdict, 2008, as Haller's half brother) serving as special investigator. The table is set for a straightforward legal thriller, albeit one starring three superbly multidimensional characters. And, yet, Connelly bobs and weaves around all our expectations. There is suspense, of course, and there are plenty of surprises, both in the courtroom and outside of it, but this is a plot that won't be pigeonholed. Is there any genre convention John Lawton hasn't boldly disregarded, often to brilliant effect? While ostensibly grounded in post-World War II London, his elegant police procedurals featuring Inspector Frederick Troy of Scotland Yard succeed in traversing fluid timelines. His characters have solid fictional substance, even as they routinely interact with real-life figures to insinuate themselves into critical events in history. And although Inspector Troy observes the basic investigative procedures, Lawton is quick to discard them when he wants to expand his crime narratives into international espionage thrillers. Troy doesn't figure in the action until almost halfway through A LILY OF THE FIELD (Atlantic Monthly, $24), which until that point reads as an unbearably tense account of two musicians whose lives and careers are shattered in the aftermath of the Anschluss. The renowned Jewish concert pianist Viktor Rosen had taken on the musical education of Méret Voytek, a prodigiously gifted young cellist whose numbed impressions of the collapse of her Viennese childhood set the novel's chilling tone. While Viktor escapes to England along with other eminent artists and scientists, Méret is shipped off to Auschwitz, where she survives only because the pathetic orchestra that plays at the whim of the camp commandant happens to lack a cello. As the war in Europe grinds on, Lawton expands the narrative to bring us word of the displaced artists and intellectuals in Viktor's crowd, especially the physicists who have made themselves useful at Los Alamos. But Méret's intimate voice and Viktor's incisive intelligence have made them such vital characters that it's a jolt to part company with them when the action moves to London in 1948, where Inspector Troy is investigating the murder of a notoriously inept Polish painter whose true calling more likely involved espionage. This shift is not only daring but technically dazzling. Lawton keeps his historical perspective on the war while introducing new characters and adding layers of political subtext to the plot. But it's only when he finally reveals the fates of Viktor and Méret that we understand how far this novel has taken us from the lost world where it began. Can Michael Connelly pull off the high-wire stunt he attempts in THE REVERSAL (Little, Brown, $27.99)? The challenge is to write a thriller that's both a courtroom drama and a police procedural, with perfectly balanced roles for Harry Bosch, the conscience-driven Los Angeles police detective who has long been Connelly's main man, and Mickey Haller, the ethically compromised defense attorney who's proud to call himself the "defender of the damned." Compared with their uneasy meeting in "The Brass Verdict," the working relationship of these half-brothers is less confrontational here, since Haller has taken an assignment for the prosecutor that temporarily puts him on the side of the angels. It's a cliffhanger case, and the roles of the two men are not only distinct but distinctively exciting, with Haller setting off the courtroom fireworks and Bosch busting chops behind the scenes. But despite the flashy plot mechanics, Connelly's strenuous efforts to maintain this symmetry inhibits his characters' individual styles. It's a swell stunt, but it's still a stunt. Any author who writes a village mystery series knows the rules: given the limited pool of potential victims and suspects, some beloved local must inevitably be culled from the herd. Louise Penny did this in "The Brutal Telling" by sacrificing one of the leading citizens of Three Pines, a quaint Canadian village that somehow survives every challenge to its bedrock values. Now, in a subplot of BURY YOUR DEAD (Minotaur, $24.99), she has done the unthinkable - essentially rewritten her previous novel by reversing the outcome. Defense attorney Mickey Haller (The Lincoln Lawyer) teams up with Harry Bosch (Nine Dragons) to tackle an almost 25-year-old case in Connelly's latest page-turner. A convicted killer has been exonerated thanks to DNA evidence, and Haller is asked to be the prosecuting attorney in the case and retry him for the murder. Bosch takes the investigator role and has to start from scratch to find enough evidence to make the conviction stick this time. And most of the original witnesses are no longer alive. VERDICT Alternating between Haller's first-person narration and the third-person narrative following Bosch, Connelly weaves a tale that solidifies his reputation as the master of the modern crime thriller. His latest constantly surprises and has keen character insight.
