Library Journal Review
Born in Ghana, cookbook author Hafner (A Taste of Africa, Ten Speed, 1993) now lives in Adelaide, Australia, where she is well known for her popular TV cooking series. Now her show is coming to PBS, and this entertaining and informative cookbook is the companion volume. Hafner traveled throughout the Caribbean, from Cuba to Jamaica, to explore the cuisines of the individual islands and the influence African food traditions had on them, and her discoveries and "shocks of recognition" make fascinating reading. She's a real storyteller, and she writes with wit and enthusiasm. Jessica Harris covered some of this ground in Iron Pots and Wooden Spoons: Africa's Gifts to New World Cooking (LJ 5/15/89); most libraries will want Hafner's book, too. (c) Copyright 2010.
