The gloom of the Depression fed a brilliant cultural efflorescence that's trenchantly explored here. Dickstein (Gates of Eden), a professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center, surveys a panorama that includes high-brow masterpieces and mass entertainments, grim proletarian novels and frothy screwball comedies, haunting photographs of dust bowl poverty and elegant art deco designs. He finds the scene a jumble of fertile contradictions-between outward-looking naturalism and introspective modernism, social consciousness and giddy escapism, a hard-boiled, increasingly desperate individualism and a new vision of singing, dancing, collective solidarity-which somehow cohered into "extraordinary attempts to cheer people up-or else to sober them up." Dickstein's fluent, erudite, intriguing meditations turn up many resonances, comparing, for example, the Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will to Busby Berkeley musicals and Gone with the Wind to gangster films. While tracing the social meanings of culture, he stays raptly alive to its aesthetic pleasures, like the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers collaboration, which expressed "the inner radiance that was one true bastion against social suffering." In this broad-ranging history of the U.S. in the 1930s, Dickstein focuses not on headline-dominating economic issues but on the creative responses of artists and authors to the era's upheavals, both actual and potential. Film came of age during these hard times and became a chief focus of people's despair and hope. Gangster films helped sublimate anger and rebellion, and musicals, especially Busby Berkeley's extravaganzas, created a fantasy world of pulchritude and glamour available to anyone with the price of admission. Writers such as Fitzgerald and dramatists on the order of Odets offered their own analyses of the decade's social stresses. Ellington and other jazz and big-band greats composed the age's theme songs. Dickstein looks beyond the mainstream to the nation's minorities, whose powerlessness made economic hardships even harder to bear, and he details the contributions of African Americans and immigrant Jews to American culture. In the 1930s, sentimental populism could coexist with polished modernism, Morris Dickstein writes. WHEN did we start slicing history into 10-year chunks? In 1926, Thomas Beer wrote "The Mauve Decade," his book about the 1890s - in the midst of what became known as the Roaring Twenties. That era landed us in the Hungry Thirties (or the Red Decade), a grimmer 10-year package. After the curative cataclysm of a second world war, we took up where we left off: the convention-bound '50s, the subversive '60s, the cringe-inducing '70s, the avaricious '80s. Why should our affairs slot into a decimal system? What about long-term trends and the manifest perversity of the human spirit, which guarantees that a significant portion of the population will be zigging while the rest zag? I'd propose a moratorium on decade analysis - except that Morris Dickstein's "Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression" proves the value of the exercise in certain special cases. The '30s were neither uniformly red nor universally hungry, but they were undeniably shadowed by economic crisis. This was the decade in which knee-jerk American assumptions about prosperity were knocked sharply back, when the American Dream - the phrase dates from the early '30s - took a drubbing. A 25 percent unemployment rate (the grim statistic from the winter of 1932) is bound to tell; so is the failure of more than 5,000 banks in just two years. The numbers were bleak, but not as bleak, perhaps, as the mood: "There was hardly a man or woman in the country," the popular historian Frederick Lewis Allen wrote in 1931, "whose attitude toward life had not been affected . . . in some degree . . . by the sudden and brutal shattering of hope." Dickstein, a professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, has organized his engaging and perceptive study around the American response to dire economic conditions and the attendant psychological damage - as sadly relevant a topic as any author could wish for. Though he argues, for instance, that the cultural shifts during the course of the decade "parallel the effects of the New Deal," he does so without falling into the trap of seeing the '30s as a self-contained unit. He recognizes, crucially, that the modernist flowering of the '20s carried over after the stock-market crash, and that the documentary impulse, so strong during the Depression, stretched back 40-odd years to Jacob Riis's "How the Other Half Lives." Dickstein's worldview can comfortably accommodate the fact that John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" and Nathanael West's "Day of the Locust," two utterly dissimilar and yet equally harrowing accounts of Depression California, were both published in 1939, and that Woody Guthrie broke into radio the same year - 1937 - that Partisan Review published Delmore Schwartz's "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities." Raw, sentimental populism could share the same cradle with mordant, polished modernism. Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in the 1937 film "Shall We Dance." "Dancing in the Dark" is old-school cultural history, with a whiff of Matthew Arnold and the best that has been thought and said. Well before he gets to Woody Guthrie, Dickstein signals with his title a keen interest in popular song (he's a big fan of Bing Crosby's recording of Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz's ballad). He also looks at photographs and design and mentions dance and painting. But his principal focus is on books and movies, and his bias is in favor of high art. "I made no effort to cover everything," he writes in his preface; he chose instead to concentrate on "unusually complex, enduring works." That's good news for those of us who welcome any reminder of the glories of '30s literature and film. But he does more than just reintroduce us to old friends; he shows them in a new light. After a fond, lingering look at "Shall We Dance" - Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in the spotlight, romancing to songs by George and Ira Gershwin Dickstein sums up expertly: "Each number is a miniature of the movie, moving from singing alone, dancing alone, dancing with the wrong person, or dancing to the wrong music to making beautiful music together." With his next breath he roughly reminds us of the context: "It's the music, the dancing, that saves all this from familiar romantic cliché. As photography documents the Depression, dance countermands it." And then he takes one more step back to give us an even broader view: "The culture of elegance, as represented by Astaire and the Gershwins, was less about the cut of your tie and tails than the cut of your feelings, the inner radiance that was one true bastion against social suffering. They preserved in wit, rhythm and fluidity of movement what the Depression almost took away, the high spirits of Americans, young and modern, who had once felt destined to be the heirs and heiresses of all the ages." Sheer delight, pure escapism, serves its cathartic purpose - and it means something, too. Which makes the omission of Walt Disney (his name doesn't even appear in the index) all the more perplexing. Even if one rejects the provocative claim by the historian Warren Susman that "Mickey Mouse may in fact be more important to an understanding of the 1930s than Franklin Roosevelt," it's hard to deny Disney a place in the pantheon of the decade's moviemakers, if only for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Fantasia." Whether or not the cartoons that delighted '30s audiences are complex works of art, they would have slotted nicely into several of Dickstein's chapters. On the lookout for a cultural artifact that served to "lift sagging morale and stimulate optimism about the future"? Try any one of the dozens of animated shorts featuring that cartoon collective, Mickey, Donald Duck and Goofy. Every gag is an explosion of energy, and the whirligig of slapstick invention always ends happily, thanks to the orchestrated efforts of our heroes. Mickey, described by Disney as "a little fellow trying to do the best he could," may have been born in the late '20s, but he grew up a pure creature of the '30s. ONE of the paradoxes of "Dancing in the Dark" is that despite its laudable ambitions, it's not particularly in tune with the temper of the '30s. As Dickstein points out, this was a period of unprecedented national self-scrutiny and our gaze was most often fixed on the things we had in common, on the culture of the people. Whereas Dickstein wants to tell us about Henry Roth's "Call It Sleep," which he hails as "one of the great novels of the century" (I'm unpersuaded), or draw attention to the populist elements in Aaron Copland's ballet scores, a contemporary critic might have been more inclined to analyze the wild popularity of Monopoly, the board game patented in 1935, or the "candid camera" craze (production of cameras in the United States jumped 157 percent from 1935 to 1937 - no slump there), which Frederick Lewis Allen, writing in 1940, linked to the haunting photographs of "dismal streets, tattered billboards and gaunt, sad-eyed farm women" by Walker Evans and others. With every click of the shutter, the documentary impulse was democratized. I only wish Dickstein had taken a somewhat more catholic approach and embraced ordinary things people did, like snap photos and listen to the Lone Ranger on the radio and play pinball down at the drugstore. "Dancing in the Dark" is a fine, high-minded survey of the decade's cultural history, but it did leave me hungry for a glimpse of everyday life. Dickstein (English and theater, CUNY) states at the outset that his aim is "to explore the role of culture in reflecting and influencing how people understand their own lives and how they cope with social and economic malaise." He concludes by saying that he has tried "to show how the expressive culture of the thirties--the books, films, murals, photographs, reportage, radio programs, dance, and music--besides telling us much about the inner life of the Depression years, played a role parallel to the leadership of FDR and the programs of the New Deal." Indeed, Dickstein succeeds brilliantly, producing an ambitious, encyclopedic tour de force, an extraordinary amalgam of history and criticism superior even to his authoritative cultural history of the 1960s, Gates of Eden (CH, Jul'77). In treating the Great Depression, Dickstein reaches back into the 1920s and ends symbolically with the New York World's Fair of 1939-40. One could find omissions, but to do so would be churlish because Dickstein's rich, varied, wide-ranging coverage; his penetrating analyses; and his eloquent writing more than compensate for minor lacunae. Few cultural historians are as well and deeply read as Dickstein, in both literature and all of the "expressive" arts, as his extensive documentation demonstrates. Summing Up: Essential. All readers. It is a strange sight - a cross between firehose and missile silo, overlooking the sweep of the Bay Bridge - but the series of frescos you find inside are stranger still. At first glance they look like benign snapshots of sun-kissed California: in one mural, farmhands calmly harvest flowers and oranges; in another, shoppers stream out of a toy store. But peer closely and you notice some intriguing political messages - a poor family desperately panning for gold while a rich family looks on; a gaunt crowd of unemployed workers; a man reaching down a copy of Das Kapital in the city library. The Coit Tower project - begun by whimsical private largesse, completed by idealistic new deal artists - doesn't make an appearance in Morris Dickstein's monumental, meandering study of depression-era culture, but it captures well the contradictions of this most contradictory of periods. By the early 1930s, perhaps a quarter of the American population was out of work; the mortgage market had collapsed; Mississippi alone had lost nearly half its farms. Roosevelt was elected in 1932 promising radical change, and promptly pushed through a rescue package that makes Obama's look timid by comparison: a blizzard of policies prescribing everything from banking regulation and agricultural reform to the construction of new roads and improved race relations. In just eight years the US had changed from a self-reliant, entrepreneurial nation that could believe Coolidge's boast that "the chief business of the American people is business" to a tangle of federal bureaucracies that - so right-wing critics feared - was in danger of resembling Soviet Russia. As Dickstein suggests, the cultural effects of this were complex. Many artists developed a keen political awareness, throwing themselves into public commissions such as the murals that became emblematic of the Works Progress Administration (not always happily, as Diego Rivera discovered after his Leninist fresco for the Rockefeller Center was destroyed in 1934). Harold Clurman founded the Group Theatre, an urgent if short-lived project to find an American drama that would confront the new politics; its most lasting product was Clifford Odets's Awake and Sing! (1935), an angst-ridden depiction of a working-class family at the crossroads. Writers as various as Michael Gold, Nathanael West, Edmund Wilson, Richard Wright and John Steinbeck revealed the squalid terror of many American lives, exposing a society whose only lasting abundance turned out to be poverty. Photographers scoured the rural south for lives that had crumbled into dust - most harrowingly Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, who found the catastrophe of the depression etched on to the faces of its victims. But Dickstein's most intriguing claim is that we shouldn't look for the depression solely in documentary projects such as these: it touched culture at every level, and in a surprisingly exuberant variety of forms. The economic crisis may have turned America's soul in on itself, but it also fed popular fantasies of escape, even signalling a reordering of society along more egalitarian lines. If we picture a depression-era movie we tend to think of John Ford's muted adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath; we forget that, six months earlier, Hollywood had produced The Wizard of Oz, in which catastrophe on the prairies initiates Dorothy's fantastical journey of self-discovery along the Yellow Brick Road. Dickstein goes further, finding echoes of the depression in everything from the synchronised chorus lines of Busby Berkeley musicals to the lightning repartee of screwball comedies. Sometimes his argument struggles to plant its feet - it's hard to see how Deco and big-band jazz do the same cultural work - but often it produces astute re-readings of unregarded popular texts. Dickstein's virtuoso section on Cole Porter captures the insouciant brilliance of many of Porter's lyrics, but also uncovers the gnawing anxiety at their heart. Bing Crosby's rendition of the song that gives Dancing in the Dark its title, here described as a "pulsing antidote to self-indulgent romantic despair", becomes, Dickstein argues, a kind of anthem for depression culture. Even if the generous scope of this book proves its undoing, the central paradox it explores - how economic bankruptcy produced such a wealth of creativity - might give us pause for thought, 80 years after the Wall Street crash. Roosevelt's determination that culture should be a fundamental part of the new deal not only gave artists, musicians and writers a working wage; it guaranteed that the social impact of the depression would be documented more profoundly than any economic disaster before or since, and created the seedbed for some of the richest and most vibrant culture America has ever produced. Just in time for our own era's economic collapse, a literary critic looks back at the unusually rich art of the 1930s. In this scholarly yet immensely readable study, Dickstein (English/CUNY; A Mirror in the Roadway: Literature in the Real World, 2005, etc.) examines how the artistic culture of the '30s served a dual function. It helped people understand and cope with the terrible economic climate, and it allowed them to escape, for a while at least, the burden of dark times. The books, music, photos, movies, plays and dances of the period both reflected and influenced the decade's unique state of mind. These wide-ranging works of art include the novels of John Steinbeck, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright and Henry Roth, and the photographs of Margaret Bourke-White and Walker Evans, which turned an unprecedented spotlight on America's poor and disenfranchised. Artists like Nathanael West, James T. Farrell, John Dos Passos and F. Scott Fitzgerald "emphasize[d] the limitations and distortions of the American Dream," even as Cagney's gangster films and Busby Berkeley's backstage musicals reinvented rags-to-riches fantasies. At a time when audiences made room simultaneously for social relevance and artistic escape, singers as disparate as Bing Crosby and Woody Guthrie had a place. The big bands of Ellington and Goodman, the romantic comedies of Hawks and Capra, the dancing of Astaire and Rogers and the music of Porter and Gershwin all supplied a touch of class for the masses. Whether discussing Citizen Kane or Porgy and Bess, the poetry of Langston Hughes, William Carlos Williams or Robert Frost, Faulkner's unique achievement and odd relation to the period, the films of Cary Grant or the elegance and energy of Art Deco, Dickstein always has something smart and lively to say. His scintillating commentary illuminates an important dimension of a decade too often considered only in political or economic terms. Dickstein (English & theater, CUNY Graduate Ctr.; A Mirror in the Roadway: Literature and the Real World) has written an extremely thorough cultural history of the Great Depression, primarily through analysis of the literature and film of the period. Chapters on different aspects of 1930s culture (as well as earlier significant works and cultural trends that informed Depression culture) provide detailed insights into the historical significance of a multitude of specific works of importance. Dickstein covers both well-known and more obscure works and draws interesting parallels between the Great Depression and today's economic situation. Background on the plots of films and books makes up a significant portion of each chapter, which is useful for readers unfamiliar with all the works covered or specialists in need of a refresher but can make readers feel they have a lot of material to plow through. VERDICT This book will be especially valuable for undergraduates new to cultural history of the era and will also be appreciated by general readers interested in the period.
