Steve Thayer was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on March 23, 1953. He graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, California in 1976. He started writing his first book, Saint Mudd, in 1982. His other works include The Weatherman and Wheat Field.

John Alden is a retired New York City detective who teaches criminal justice at Cornell University. With assistance from his students, he identifies and tracks a real-life serial killer, only to confront the madman on top of a bridge and then tumble with him over a waterfall. It was 2010 when Alden went over the falls, but when he awakens it's 1929, and he's convinced that the killer also survived both the fall and the time jump. When he attempts to convince the townspeople of Ithaca Falls that he is a visitor from the twenty-first century on the trail of a time-traveling killer, he is met with, well, skepticism. That turns to confusion and fear when Alden predicts the financial panic and Great Depression that are right around the corner. Thayer handles the time-travel aspect of his story effectively, building suspense while the clock ticks toward economic collapse, but the serial-killer plot lacks punch. Conan Doyle fans, of course, will enjoy the homage to Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty, and the Reichenbach Falls, but, all in all, this one never quite hits on all cylinders.--Ayers, Jeff Copyright 2015 Booklist
