A basic introduction to NASCAR, the hottest sport in America, opens this short, collective biography of notable drivers, past and present. Full chapters are devoted to four men: Glenn Fireball Roberts, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Sr., and Jeff Gordon. Each of these opens with a present-tense account of a famous race, backtracks to follow the racer's career, and ends with a page listing his main achievements. Four other drivers, Sara Christian, Bill Elliott, Janet Guthrie, and David Pearson, are profiled more briefly. With fairly large type and plenty of illustrations, the book will appeal to young NASCAR fans who are beginning to read chapter books. At least one photo, usually in color, appears on each double-page spread.
