Summary
Summary
The year is 1928. Kate Moore is looking for a way out of the poverty and violence of her childhood. When a chance encounter on a transatlantic ocean liner brings her face-to-face with the handsome heir to a Chicago fortune, she thinks she may have found her escape--as long as she can keep her past concealed.
After exchanging wedding vows, Kate quickly discovers that something isn't quite right with her husband--or her new family. As Mrs. Matthew Lemont, she must contend with her husband's disturbing past, his domineering mother, and his overly close sister. Isolated at Lakecrest, the sprawling, secluded Lemont estate, she searches desperately for clues to Matthew's terrors, which she suspects stem from the mysterious disappearance of his aunt years before. As Kate stumbles deeper into a maze of family secrets, she begins to question everyone's sanity--especially her own. But just how far will she go to break free of this family's twisted past?

Publisher's Weekly Review
Blackwell's (While Beauty Slept) latest is a gothic novel about a young woman finding her own rags-to-riches rise in 1928 suburban Chicago. Kate Moore is a summer companion accompanying her young charges on a voyage from England across the Atlantic back to the U.S. when she meets Matthew Lemont, the handsome and wealthy heir to the Lemont fortune. After their chance encounter leads to marriage, Kate feels out of her element at Lakecrest, the Lemont estate outside Chicago. Kate becomes disturbed by Matthew's strange nightmares and the disappearance of his aunt Cecily years before. As Kate tries to assimilate into the Lemont way of life and avoid the presence of her dogmatic mother-in-law, Hannah, she gets closer to learning the secrets behind Matthew's vivid nightmares and Cecily's disappearance. Blackwell has expertly crafted the novel so that it is impossible to tell which characters are truly evil. Marjorie, Matthew's twin, has never really liked Kate but hasn't been as vicious toward her as Hannah has. And Matthew's loyalty to his mother seems to surpass his loyalty to Kate, so she is never sure if she can truly trust him. The simmering undercurrent that something ominous is about to happen runs throughout the entire novel, resulting in a true page-turner. (Feb.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
Booklist Review
In Blackwell's (While Beauty Slept, 2014) compelling Jazz Age novel, Kate Moore is working as a governess when she meets handsome and wealthy Matthew Lemont on a transatlantic cruise. Instead of returning to her humble life in Ohio, she accepts his invitation to visit his hometown of Chicago, where, after a few dazzling days, he convinces her to marry him. But Kate soon finds out life as Mrs. Matthew Lemont is not wholly one of glamour. They move into his family's estate, Lakecrest, on Chicago's North Shore, where she must contend with her controlling mother-in-law and the rumors that surround the long-ago disappearance of Matthew's aunt. She also discovers that Matthew suffers from debilitating flashbacks to his combat experiences in WWI. As Kate unravels all the Lemont family secrets, she also becomes embroiled in her own. Blackwell ably melds romance and mystery into an alluring American historical novel.--Walker, Aleksandra Copyright 2017 Booklist
