Summary
It?s summer and nothing much is happening in Rathmoye. So it doesn?t go unnoticed when a dark-haired stranger appears on his bicycle and begins photographing the mourners at Mrs. Connulty?s funeral. Florian Kilderry couldn?t know that the Connultys are said to own half the town: he has only come to Rathmoye to photograph the scorched remains of its burnt- out cinema.
A few miles out in the country, Dillahan, a farmer and a decent man, has married again: Ellie is the young convent girl who came to work for him when he was widowed. Ellie leads a quiet, routine life, often alone while Dillahan runs the farm.
Florian is planning to leave Ireland and start over. Ellie is settled in her new role as Dillahan?s wife. But Florian?s visit to Rathmoye introduces him to Ellie, and a dangerously reckless attachment begins.
In a characteristically masterly way Trevor evokes the passions and frustrations felt by Ellie and Florian, and by the people of a small Irish town during one long summer.
Author Notes
William Trevor Cox was born in Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland on May 24, 1928. He received a degree in history from Trinity College in 1950. Before becoming a full-time author in 1965, he worked as a sculptor, a teacher, and a copywriter at an advertising agency. He exhibited his sculptures in Dublin and England and was joint winner of the International Year of the Political Prisoner art competition in 1952.
His first novel, A Standard of Behaviour, was published in 1958. His other novels include Other People's Worlds, Nights at the Alexandra, The Silence in the Garden, The Story of Lucy Gault, My House in Umbria, and Love and Summer. He won the Hawthornden Prize in 1964 for The Old Boys, the Whitbread Award in 1976 for The Children of Dynmouth, the Whitbread Award in 1983 for Fools of Fortune, and the Whitbread Award in 1994 for Felicia's Journey.
His short story collections include The Day We Got Drunk on Cake and Other Stories, The Ballroom of Romance and Other Stories, Beyond the Pale, A Bit on the Side, Cheating at Canasta, and The Mark-2 Wife. The Hill Bachelors received the 2001 Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Macmillan Silver Pen Award for Short Stories. He received the Allied Irish Banks' Prize in 1976, The Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence in 1992, the David Cohen British Literature Prize in 1999, and the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award in Irish Literature in 2008. In 1977, he was awarded an honorary CBE in recognition of his services to literature. He died on November 20, 2016 at the age of 88.

Do summer and love automatically, or at least frequently, go hand in hand? It's a nice sentiment, but in Trevor's latest (his fourteenth) novel, he tests the legitimacy of that quaint idea (or is it a perfect ideal?). The setting for his exploration of how love and summer mix, or don't mix, is customary Trevor territory: rural, small-town Ireland in the 1950s. Raised in a Catholic orphanage, Ellie Dillahan is eventually farmed out by the nuns to keep house for an area farmer, a widower. With love having nothing to do with it, he and Ellie stumble into marriage. Her life is now satisfactory, until one summer when she meets a young photographer who has returned to the region to sell his family property and leave Ireland altogether. She falls in love; he doesn't. Trevor predictably matches an exquisite but never precious prose style with wise psychological understanding of the fluster beneath the surface of ordinary lives. WILLIAM TREVOR'S 14th novel begins about 50 years ago with a funeral in the Irish country town he calls Rathmoye. The deceased is Mrs. Eileen Connulty, a prosperous widow who ran a local lodging house for traveling salesmen, Number 4 The Square, and who, as death came near, "feared she would now be obliged to join her husband and prayed she would not have to." The emotional realignments Mrs. Connulty's two middle-aged children will undergo as a result of her passing are in the normal order of things; her funeral's true importance, however, will lie not in its grim grinding of Life's usual gears but in the way it fatefully joins two bystanders. A young amateur photographer named Florian Kilderry, who has bicycled seven and a half miles into Rathmoye to take some pictures, finds himself blocked by the funeral procession and in need of directions. They are provided by a shy young farmer's wife, Ellie Dillahan, who will later recall "noticing the hands that operated the camera. Delicate hands, she'd said to herself." Raised as a foundling by the nuns at Cloonhill convent, Ellie had eventually been placed as a housekeeper with Mr. Dillahan, the owner of a snug, successful farm, an entirely decent man haunted by the accident that took the lives of his wife and infant child. After a few years he married Ellie, and they have now settled into a peaceable, dull routine. Ellie is "content but for her childlessness," or so she believes, but after a second encounter with Florian she is unable to banish the photographer from her mind. For a moment she considers taking her thoughts to the confessional, since, for all their blamelessness, they seem to have consecrated the simple objects she and Florian were surrounded by when they met in the local grocery store: "She wondered if they would ever be the same again, if what she'd bought herself would be, the Brown & Poison's cornflour, Rinso. She wondered if she would be the same herself." If not so transfigured as Ellie, Florian is infatuated with her gentle innocence. "The sole relic of an Italian mother and an Anglo-Irish father," a gaily artistic pair who lived mostly on love and charm, Florian has inherited neither their talents - he knows he has no real gifts as a photographer - nor their romantic luck. Ellie will never extinguish the torch he's been carrying for an Italian cousin, Isabella, ever since the summer visits she made to Ireland when they were both adolescents. Possessed of a curious but convincing combination of fecklessness and strong will, Florian sits inside Shelhanagh, his parents' decaying country house, wondering what to do. After deciding to sell the place and go abroad, he makes a bonfire of his father's diaries and his mother's postcards. But he delays revealing his intentions to Ellie during their chaste meetings at the gate-lodge of what was once a fine estate. "Perhaps Scandinavia," he finally says, in answer to her question about where he'll go. Though he does have a "fondness for concealment," Florian is not so much caddish as emotionally lazy. He seeks "to prolong a friendship which summer had almost made an idyll of. . . . He had loved being loved, and knew too late that tenderness in return was not enough." And so the idyll continues, drawing Ellie toward the brink: "She had meat to get in Hearn's, and a few groceries in the Cash and Carry. Then she looked up Scandinavia in Hogan's, where she had once bought a new exercise-book for the accounts. School books were kept too, and she found Scandinavia in an atlas." Ellie and Florian are threatened by the madness of two other people. Devotees of Trevor's slyly plotted fiction will guess early on that the addled local wanderer, Orpen Wren, once a retainer on the estate where Ellie and Florian have their meetings, will end up playing a key if inadvertent role in bringing matters to a crisis. Still harrowed by the memory of an abortion that followed her long-ago affair with a married man, she is ferociously determined to make sure everyone else toes the sexual line. There remains in her "a wince, a tremor, some part of her anger that was not satisfied," and she would not have it otherwise. For more than half a century, the 81-year-old Trevor has written of the passions churning beneath the surface of a world where the parlor clock endlessly ticks and the fat on the plates is always congealing. In book after book, he has somehow turned the nondescript and the habitual into the exceptionally vivid and particular: "Farmers brought in livestock on the first Monday of every month, and borrowed money from one of Rathmoye's two banks. They had their teeth drawn by the dentist who practiced in the Square." The real dramas in this world go largely unspoken; they reach the reader in thought balloons of suppressed desire that the author launches, stealthily, above the idle chatter and run-of-the-mill action. Trevor doesn't even need to start a new paragraph when shifting from one to the other, when showing us that the hand putting on makeup or threading a needle is being operated by a nervous system aflame with anger or shame or longing: "In the crab-apple orchard she scattered grain and the hens came rushing to her. She hadn't been aware that she didn't love her husband." There is a good deal of kindness in Trevor's Rathmoye, and in the Rathmoyes he has created before it. Dillahan is good to Ellie, as the nuns had been. Mrs. Carley, once a maid at Shelhanagh, is kind to Florian; and the customers of aging Mr. Buckley, one of the salesmen at Mrs. Connulty's, look out for him, correcting the errors he now makes when writing up orders, protecting him so "that he might safely reach the retirement he secretly craved." But dread and terror are also always present in this repressive world. Trevor is fantastically effective at foreboding; he can make a reader squirm just by withholding the next bit of some long-past anterior action he's been recounting. When he wishes, as in his 1994 novel, "Felicia's Journey," he can depict the most gruesome violence, but always in the same even tones with which the hens get fed. This new novel, except for the accidents that took Mrs. Connulty's husband and Dillahan's first wife, is a delicate sort of drama - there is no corpse in the basement, no bomb lies hidden in any drawer - but even so, a reader will have his heart in his mouth for the last 50 pages. And when that heart settles back down, it will be broken and satisfied. Trevor's books come around as regularly as the salesmen showing up at Number 4 The Square. "Love and Summer," the latest item from his venerable suitcase, is a thrilling work of art. Trevor stealthily launches thought balloons of suppressed desire above the idle chatter of village life. It is here that Ellie, an ex-convent girl who is now married to Dillahan, a local farmer, first sets eyes on Florian Kilderry, a dilettantish figure and a stranger in town. She is almost instantly transformed, consumed by thoughts of him and, as they begin meeting in secret, quickly falls in love. Trevor writes with quiet assurance, gradually revealing the tortured emotion lying beneath the seemingly simple life he portrays. Constrained by memory's persistent voice Miss Connulty, an embittered spinster, longs for the lover who deserted her; Dillahan is haunted by the tragic death of his first wife; and Florian seeks to escape his unrequited love for his cousin. Trevor's characters muddle along and, as the long summer draws to a close, Ellie comes to the realisation that there are things "more awful by far than love's denial". Masterful in its grasp of humanity, this is a beautifully written meditation on love. The poignancy of life worn down at the elbows, Trevor's signature note, gently animates another masterpiece. Until Florian Kilderry, ineffectual photographer sporting a loud necktie, bicycled into Rathmoye, a town where "nothing happened," Ellie Dillahan never knew she didn't love her husband. "A young Catholic girl from the hills," she's the sort of secretly budding wallflower that Trevor (Cheating at Canasta: Stories, 2007, etc.) typically invests somehow with magic. Trevor's first novel since 2002's Booker-shortlisted The Story of Lucy Gault beautifully reveals the summer love that blooms between Ellie Dillahan, an orphan who has become a farmer's wife, and Florian Kilderry, a bachelor haunted by his muse yet lacking any means of expressing his art. Ellie and Florian meet in Rathmoye, a small Irish town where the influential and tragic Connulty family owns several concerns, including a burned-out cinema and a boarding house. Only Miss Connulty and her brother, Joseph Paul, remain to enact the final scene of their family's drama, into which the young lovers have unwittingly stumbled. Trevor directs his characters to a stunning conclusion that affirms love's sustaining influence even in the midst of heartache and profound disappointment. Verdict Trevor's latest is rich in dazzling imagery, especially variations on light, illumination, and reflection, and unforgettable characters like Orpen Wren, a potentially senile librarian. 1. On a June evening some years after the middle of the last century Mrs Eileen Connulty passed through the town of Rathmoye: from Number 4 The Square to Magennis Street, into Hurley Lane, along Irish Street, across Cloughjordan Road to the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer. Her night was spent there. The life that had come to an end had been one of good works and resolution, with a degree of severity in domestic and family matters. The anticipation of personal contentment, which had long ago influenced Mrs Connulty's acceptance of the married state and the bearing of two children, had since failed her: she had been disappointed in her husband and in her daughter. As death approached, she had feared she would now be obliged to join her husband and prayed she would not have to. Her daughter she was glad to part from; her son -- now in his fiftieth year, her pet since first he lay in her arms as an infant -- Mrs Connulty had wept to leave behind. The blinds of private houses, drawn down as the coffin went by, were released soon after it had passed. Shops that had closed opened again. Men who had uncovered their heads replaced caps or hats, children who had ceased to play in Hurley Lane were no longer constrained. The undertakers descended the steps of the church. Tomorrow's Mass would bring a bishop; until the very last, Mrs Connulty would be given her due. People at that time said the family Mrs Connulty had married into owned half of Rathmoye, an impression created by their licensed premises in Magennis Street, their coal yards in St Matthew Street, and Number 4 The Square, a lodging house established by the Connultys in 1903. During the decades that had passed since then there had been the acquisition of other properties in the town; repaired and generally put right, they brought in modest rents that, accumulating, became a sizeable total. But even so it was an exaggeration when people said that the Connultys owned half of Rathmoye. Compact and ordinary, it was a town in a hollow that had grown up there for no reason that anyone knew or wondered about. Farmers brought in livestock on the first Monday of every month, and borrowed money from one of Rathmoye's two banks. They had their teeth drawn by the dentist who practised in the Square, from time to time consulted a solicitor there, inspected the agricultural machinery at Des Devlin's on the Nenagh road, dealt with Heffernan the seed merchant, drank in one of the town's many public houses. Their wives shopped for groceries from the warehouse shelves of the Cash and Carry, or in McGovern's if they weren't economizing; for shoes in Tyler's; for clothes, curtain material and oilcloth in Corbally's drapery. There had once been employment at the mill, and at the mill's electricity plant before the Shannon Scheme came; there was employment now at the creamery and the condensed-milk factory, in builders' yards, in shops and public houses, at the bottled-water plant. There was a courthouse in the Square, an abandoned railway station at the end of Mill Street. There were two churches and a convent, a Christian Brothers' school and a technical school. Plans for a swimming-pool were awaiting the acquisition of funds. Nothing happened in Rathmoye, its people said, but most of them went on living there. It was the young who left -- for Dublin or Cork or Limerick, for England, sometimes for America. A lot came back. That nothing happened was an exaggeration too. The funeral Mass was on the morning of the following day, and when it was over Mrs Connulty's mourners stood about outside the cemetery gates, declaring that she would never be forgotten in the town and beyond it.
