This unconventional take on fashion history is a collection of capsule fashion histories. From January 1 through December 31, each day features a fashion event from sometime in history, from the first century AD to the present. Fashion historian Chrisman-Campbell writes that selecting garments based on the date they were worn levels the playing field, allowing both ordinary and luxurious pieces to be covered. She also takes a broad view of what constitutes a garment, including gas masks (worn by a mother and child during a 1941 tear gas drill), an iron collar (worn by a woman freed by Union soldiers after the capture of New Orleans), and a haircut (the shag sported by Jane Fonda in her 1970 mugshot). The organization allows for interesting juxtapositions; for instance, Jackie Kennedy's iconic pillbox hat is next to the pink pussy hats from the 2017 Women's March. While 365 garments are described, about a third of them are actually pictured. Fun to flip through, with plenty of fascinating facts about fashion and history, Worn On This Day is recommended for public and school libraries.--Lindsay Harmon Copyright 2020 Booklist
