Frank Cottrell Boyce is a writer of books for young readers, most notably Millions, winner of the Carnegie Medal, and Cosmic, which garnered six starred reviews. Both titles have been turned into films. He is also the author of The Unforgotten Coat. Frank Cottrell Boyce lives in England.
Joe Berger is an editorial cartoonist, animator, and illustrator. He has illustrated numerous books, including the Nosy Crow title Hubble Bubble Granny Trouble by Tracey Corderoy . Joe Berger lives in England.

Sir Ian Fleming's heirs, who have commissioned numerous James Bond sequels, turned to Boyce (Cosmic) to continue Fleming's 1964 story Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car, and Boyce delivers: this follow-up outshines the original. The only returning character is the car, and the book's spirit (surreal craziness) is much closer to Roald Dahl's 1968 screenplay than it is to Fleming's novel. In place of Caractacus Potts and Co. are the Tootings, a modern, multiracial family with three children-Goth Lucy, practical Jem, and baby Harry. After Tom Tooting loses his job, his wife buys him a broken-down camper van, which he and Jem renovate, unknowingly fitting it with an engine from Count Zborowski's famous racecar. Adventures ensue as the van takes the Tootings around the world to collect the rest of its lost parts; the story doesn't end so much as set up the next installment. Berger adds comical artwork-he even sneaks in a diagram of Bond's Aston Martin-creating a Chitty that any kid would be thrilled to own. Unlike other trendy returns to classic British stories, such as Peter Pan in Scarlet (2006), this isn't a narrative sequel to Ian Fleming's 1964 children's book the Tootings, a modern-day, biracial family of five, have never even heard of a flying car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. (In real life, the eponymous Disney movie should at least ring a bell.) Rather, the esteemed Boyce revisits the general concept of auto-aerial exploits as their camper van, rehabbed with a mysterious old engine found in a junkyard tree, flies the Tootings across the globe, dodging evildoers and reassembling itself with missing pieces, such as headlights from the Eiffel Tower. Like Fleming's (whose family authorized this effort) original, this includes black-and-white spot illustrations, and there are references to his book in the structure and names. But the tone is contemporary, becoming much more Lemony Snickety as the plot progresses. The novel stands on its own as a satisfying, fresh family adventure, and readers will look forward to two forthcoming volumes. Ian Fleming's estate has had a lot of experience of exploiting the characters under its control: along with the James Bond movies, there have been dozens of novels about 007. Kingsley Amis wrote the first under a pseudonym just after Fleming's death; John Gardner wrote another 16 in the 80s. More recently, both Sebastian Faulks and Jeffrey Deaver have had a go, while Charlie Higson has written five novels about Bond's schooldays. After the success of all these sequels, the Fleming estate has now branched out and commissioned a sequel to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the novel that Fleming wrote for his son in 1964. Their chosen writer, Frank Cottrell Boyce, is the author of several brilliant books for children. In his sequel, the only character who survives from Fleming's novel is the car itself; rather than the eccentric Caractacus Pott, his wife Mimsie and their children Jeremy and Jemima, Cottrell Boyce has created the Tootings, a modern, ordinary and very recognisable family: harried Dad, sensible Mum, grumpy Lucy, practical Jem and the baby, Little Harry. When Dad is fired and his company car is taken away, Mum buys a broken old camper van, which the family renovates using parts from a racing car which once belonged to the famous Count Zborowski. They soon discover that their new car has a mind of its own . . . When I was a child, I loved the film of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I loved it so much, in fact, that I tracked down the novel too. I can't remember if I'd read any of the James Bond books then, or even knew who Ian Fleming was, but I do remember my disappointment; the novel was so timid, so drab, so black and white in comparison to the multi-coloured craziness of the movie. The contrast between film and book makes sense once you learn that Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay: his dangerous imagination bubbles out of every scene. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again is much funnier and more engaging than Fleming's original novel. The book looks great too, filled with lovely illustrations by Joe Berger, who even manages to sneak in a magnificent diagram of James Bond's Aston Martin, detailing exactly where you'll find its secret panels, machine guns and ejector seat. But I still missed the wonderful characters created by Dahl: I kept longing to meet Baron Bomburst or Truly Scrumptious, or, best of all, the Child Catcher, stalking through the streets, crying: "Ice-cream!
