Each book in this essential series reveals the life cycles of ten animals in a particular habitat which link together to create three food chains. At the end of the book a simple overview helps readers understand how the three food chains interact to create a food web- the perfect first introduction to this core science concept.

Horn Book Review

After brief introductions to the title ecosystems, examples of three actual food chains within that ecosystem are presented (e.g., from Rainforests: leafcutter ant, armadillo, jaguar). Well-designed double-page spreads (including useful tab-charts on left-hand pages) provide brief information about each creature and its place on the chain. Vivid photos and vibrantly colored pages are eye-catching. Useful food web charts summarizing content are appended. Glos., ind. Booklist Review

Part of the Life Cycles series, this title combines two important elementary science concepts: life cycles and food chains. Double-page spreads focus on 11 ocean animals and where they fall in three different food chains, including the more familiar jellyfish and shark as well as animals not usually included in such books, like salmon and bald eagles. An introductory paragraph on how each animal lives or interacts in the ocean follows, along with the animal's four-stage life cycle (complete with illustrations or photographs of each stage) and interesting facts ( A starfish eats by pushing its stomach out through its mouth ). A concluding sentence and a glimpse of a different animal offer clues about the next predator in the food chain. An attractive layout with large, simply stated text, an ocean-blue background, and plenty of photographs make things easy on the eye, while a pictorial animal guide along each page, a glossary, and an index make the book easy to use.--Leeper, Angela Copyright 2010 Booklist
