Originally produced in the 1970s, this is the first American commercial release of this documentary that spans a five-year period and captures the daily life of a husband and wife in rural France. Jules is a blacksmith and performs his tasks using tools probably handed down over generations. The viewer watches in fascination as he fires up his forge and begins hammering metal. There is a great attention to detail throughout the film as the couple perform a series of seemingly endless chores such as when wife Felicie prepares coffee or sews a button on a shirt. There is little dialog between the two, but for this hardworking couple it seems perfectly natural as they appear to have no other interests besides their work on the farm.
