Author Notes

Johnny D. Boggs has worked cattle, shot rapids in a canoe, hiked across mountains and deserts, and traipsed around ghost towns--all in the name of finding a good story. He has won the Spur Award from Western Writers of America six times, as well as the Western Heritage Wrangler Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. He lives with his family in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

In this third series entry, the brooding, self-effacing Daniel Killstraight has risen to the position of Metal Shirt, or reservation policeman. Law enforcement is a perfect limbo for a young man caught between cultures Killstraight was forcibly educated at the Carlisle Industrial School, where Kill the Indian, Not the Man was a guiding principle. Killstraight accompanies Quanah Parker to Fort Worth, where the great leader negotiates with Texas ranchers to lease the Big Pasture, or the massive tribal grasslands of the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache. After a spirited session over dinner where several suspects appear Parker turns in early, along with his friend, the likable Chief Yellow Bear. But in the morning, Yellow Bear is found dead, and Parker is comatose, poisoned by the gaslights. Only Daniel and a colorful Dallas reporter believe the accident was murder. Daniel doesn't think much of himself as a detective, but he turns out to be a good one in this impeccably researched story that begins with great deliberation and then accelerates to a startling, violent, very sad finish.--Mort, John Copyright 2010 Booklist
