This biography is informed by two revelations: first, a bombshell that is likely to be debated as long as there are inquiring readers of Emily Dickinson; and second, the effect of a family love affair on the poet's long and complex publishing history. When Dickinson writes "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain" and punctuates her work in a spasmodic style, Gordon maintains we are privy to the neuronal misfiring of epilepsy. Gordon unearths compelling evidence: the glycerine Dickinson was prescribed, then a common treatment for epilepsy; her photosensitivity; and a family history of epilepsy. The stigma-packed condition, says Gordon, is at least one source of Dickinson's celebrated isolation. Gordon, biographer of Virginia Woolf and Mary Wollstonecraft, also recounts the fallout from the affair between the poet's straitlaced, married brother, Austin, and the far younger, also married Mabel Loomis Todd. In a literary land grab, descendants of the families of Dickinson and Todd (who edited many of Emily's papers) squared off in a fight to control the poet's work and myth. *Starred Review* Forever vanquished is the pallid icon of Emily Dickinson as the reclusive virgin saint of Amherst. In The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson (2010), Jerome Charyn imagines the poet as an adventurous, sexy rebel, and now Gordon, biographer of Virginia Woolf and Mary Wollstonecraft, explodes all previous theories in an electrifying family portrait. It wasn't heartbreak that kept the poet sequestered, Gordon argues with high-beam cogency, it was epilepsy, a then-uncontrollable and shameful malady. With one stroke, Gordon recasts Dickinson's entire oeuvre. She then reveals the outrageous treachery of the poet's esteemed brother, Austin, who held his unmarried sisters, wife Susan, and their children hostage to his passion for his ambitious mistress, Mabel Loomis Todd, whose scheming husband encouraged the affair. So much for New England decorum and restraint. With trysts in Lavinia and Emily's cherished home and sanctuary, Mabel's escalating demands, and Austin's utter callousness toward his family, a great feud was born. And on it raged long after Emily's death as the irrepressible, multitalented Mabel deciphered, typed, and published Dickinson's poems. Literary bloodhound and superbly eloquent chronicler Gordon follows every twist and kink of the ensuing legal skirmishes, especially the poignant battle between Mabel's daughter and Emily's niece, in a Shakespearean tale of a house divided. THE tale that Lyndall Gordon unveils in "Lives Like Loaded Guns" is so lurid, so fraught with forbidden passions, that readers may be disappointed to find that no actual gun goes off in this feverish account of the Dickinson family "feuds." There are metaphorical guns galore, including Dickinson's self-portrait as lethal wallflower: "My Life had stood - a Loaded Gun -/In Corners - till a Day /The Owner passed - identified -/ And carried Me away." Gordon, who has written highly regarded biographies of Charlotte Brontë, T.S. Eliot and Mary Wollstonecraft, detects two patterns of "explosive inheritance" in Dickinson, who happened to have a grandmother named Gunn: eruptions in the lives and in the poems. Dickinson's Amherst, as Gordon sees it, was built on Puritanical propriety, where the "elect" attended church and eccentricity was hidden. The Dickinsons were the "first family." The poet's grandfather was a founder of Amherst College; her father, Edward, and her older brother, Austin, both lawyers, served in turn as its treasurer. Edward, elected to a term in Congress, showed off his marriageable daughters, Emily and Lavinia, on a tour of Washington. On their return, in 1855, he purchased the imposing brick Homestead on Main Street, and planned a showy residence next door for Austin's family. Amid these trappings of respectability, however, were stirrings of what Gordon calls (without explicit reference to Matthew Arnold's poem) "the buried life." The three Dickinson children, unlike their strait-laced parents, were all prey to "extravagant passions," their emotions "molten and rumbling underground." The "tempestuously handsome" Austin married Susan Gilbert, despite her reluctance; he rashly promised that he wouldn't touch her if she preferred a mariage blanc. Lavinia was so eager to marry the cute Yalie Joseph Lyman, coiling her long tresses around his neck, that she scared him away, to New Orleans. Emily, in her guise of shy daisy, wrote masochistic love letters to a married man she addressed as "Master": "Low at the knee that bore her once . . . Daisy kneels a culprit . . . but punish don't banish her." Gordon shows how literary these love lives were, how scripted and plotted according to the latest novels. "Susan was sober, a reserved Jane Eyre aware of an orphan's position as visitor in others' homes," she writes of Dickinson's sister-in-law. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, reaching a wide public from her sickbed, "may have served as a model for the way of life Dickinson would devise for herself as poet." But why the sickbed rather than the marriage bed? This is the occasion for Gordon's boldest stroke. She has combed Dickinson's poems for an "explosive image-cluster: . . . the earthquakes, the rumbling volcanoes, Vesuvius, Etna and the poet's voice like lava, coming in spurts through the 'buckled lips' of a crater." Gordon notes that Dickinson got a good scientific education at Amherst Academy, where she studied volcanoes and earthquakes, finding "future landscapes for recurrent eruptions" in her poems. But Gordon thinks there were eruptions in Dickinson's brain as well, accounting for the poet's reclusiveness and even, perhaps, for her white dress, adopted for "sanitary" reasons. "What's clear," the author concludes, "is that she coped inventively with gunshots from the brain into her body." Gordon's suggestion that Dickinson may have been epileptic has already inspired debate among scholars, and disagreement about the significance of the medications she was prescribed. But Gordon's reading of Dickinson's poems, with their "fits" and "throes," does reveal a poetics in some sense seizure-based, if only metaphorically so. She felt "a Cleaving" in her brain; her mentor, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, called her poems "spasmodic." But if she was an invalid confined to her house, what should we make of those baffling "Master letters"? Gordon suspects that the letters were little more than "a stirring fantasy," mere "exercises in composition." Gordon is needlessly cruel to Mrs. Bowles, with her "washed-out face" and "thin plait tightly coiled, like a platter glued to the back of her head." The author can seem a disappointed matchmaker in her analysis of these marriages. Why did Bowles, with his "surge of emotional excitement," marry this "gutted" woman? Why did Austin wait out the reluctant Susan rather than marry her far more eager sister, "who loved him more"? If only he had, perhaps the great eruption of "Lives Like Loaded Guns" might have been avoided. Maybe Austin might have resisted the charms of Mabel Loomis Todd, wife of an Amherst astronomy professor. For it is Mabel's "intrusion" - as Gordon calls it - into the lives of the Dickinson family that inspired the continuing feuds recounted in the second half of the book. If Dickinson scholars remain divided, as Gordon claims, between Susan's supporters and Mabel's, the author leaves no doubt about which side she is on. She explains away Susan's failure to find a publisher for Dickinson's posthumous poems as fear of rejection. It was Mabel Todd, instead, who found editors and publishers, and rallied public opinion around Emily Dickinson. Gordon wants to persuade us that Emily Dickinson shared her outrage at Mabel's inroads, and didn't much like that Austin and Mabel, whom she calls the "Lady Macbeth of Amherst," used the dining room of the Homestead for their sexual trysts. But here, her evidence is shaky. When Dickinson laments the death of flowers by referring, obliquely, to "the Deathless of Thermopylae," is it really clear that she sees her family as the brave but doomed Spartans besieged by the "Persian invader" Mabel? Even if Gordon doesn't persuade us that Dickinson, who died in 1886, took an active part in "her family's feuds," the story of the mushrooming "war between the houses" has its own fascination. Gordon gives a vivid account of the two unsavory trials in 1898 that pitted Mabel against Lavinia, both of them lying on the stand, ostensibly over a strip of land but really about the unspoken fact of adultery. Susan and Mabel, each armed with a horde of Emily's manuscripts, passed their animosities on to their dutiful daughters. Gordon treats the doomed daughters with a sympathetic equanimity that she withholds from their mothers. What is it about Emily Dickinson that invites metaphors of war and violence? We have had, during the past few decades, a biography called "My Wars Are Laid Away in Books," a book on Dickinson as "A Voice of War," a biographical study called "White Heat" and now these "Lives Like Loaded Guns." Why does the prim spinster in the white dress and the tight quatrains court our disbelief, and merely confirm our conviction that buried lives and buried lava are on the verge of exploding to the surface? Is it something about her or about us? Gordon's suggestion that Dickinson may have been epileptic has already inspired debate among scholars. Any writer brave enough to undertake a biography of Emily Dickinson has to grapple with a century's burden of cultural baggage - numerous biographical mysteries, extreme and conflicting interpretations of her work, and her sacerdotal role as muse for other American poets. Dickinson's life story is both alarmingly uneventful and heavily weighed down with the legends of the recluse, the wraith and the virginal spinster in a white dress. Was she the victim of a secret unrequited love, revealed in her ecstatically submissive letters to an unknown, married "Master"? Was she the unhappy woman genius confined by her sex and class, "starving of passion" in "her father's garden", as William Carlos Williams wrote? Was she the lesbian who adored her sister-in-law Susan Gilbert Dickinson, and unconsciously revealed her longings in "clitoral imagery"? Was her social withdrawal after the mid-1850s neurotic, or a strategic choice for her art? Why did she refuse to publish during her lifetime all but seven of her 1,789 poems? In the 20th century, Dickinson became the inspiration and muse for a generation of American women writers. Adrienne Rich wrote about her as "Vesuvius at Home". The novelists Carol Shields, in Mary Swann, and Joyce Carol Oates, in Mysteries of Winterthurn, both channelled Dickinson's voice through invented women poets. For male American poets, Dickinson has appeared as a more challenging and threatening muse, one to be conquered and seduced. Billy Collins describes the experience of entering into her poetic world as "Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes": "I could plainly hear her inhale / when I undid the very top / hook-and-eye fastener of her corset / and I could her hear her sigh when finally it was unloosed." Indeed, Dickinson's status as the great 19th-century American woman poet may actually stand in the way of a dispassionate American literary response. Oxford professor Lyndall Gordon brings the advantage of distance and a fresh and tough-minded perspective to her fascinating study. Combining information from biographies and library archives, and paying careful attention to material that has been overlooked or overshadowed, Gordon also considers the afterlife of Dickinson's poetry. She offers clear and boldly original answers to the "unanswered questions" of Dickinson's life, and an ethnographic and historical approach to the problems of the literary biographer. Although such answers can never explain the nature or sources of creativity, Gordon argues that they can offer "securer openings" to Dickinson's buried life. She makes four major arguments. First, and most important, Dickinson's social withdrawal was strategic, and afforded her opportunity to develop her art: "Stillness, for her, was not a retreat from life but a form of control." Second, Dickinson was "susceptible to both sexes", with both "an intense tie to Susan" and strong attractions to men. In the late 1870s, she had a romance with the widowed Judge Otis Lord of Salem, 18 years her senior, and wrote some unmistakably erotic letters to the man she called her "lovely Salem": "I will not wash my arm; 'twill take your touch away." Third, the masochistic "Master" letters were "largely, although not completely, a stirring fantasy". Gordon dismisses all the real-life candidates for the "Master", insisting that no man she actually knew could have "lent himself to the royal extravagance of her desire". Finally, Gordon hypothesises that Dickinson suffered from epilepsy, and that the stigma of the disease could be the reason, or the excuse, for her seclusion. While the evidence for this argument is circumstantial, depending on poetic images of light, convulsion and "throes", and on the prescriptions Dickinson received from doctors for vague "eye troubles", Gordon makes a persuasive case for the link between epilepsy's visual and cerebral distortions and Dickinson's extraordinary language. Overall, Gordon focuses on what she calls the "DNA of the Dickinson family", setting Emily among her siblings and descendants, and tracing the complex "social landscape" and literary effects of her environment. She was not the only remarkable Dickinson sibling. As her elder brother Austin once wrote apologetically to a publisher: "This may seem very queer to you, and it is. We are a queer lot." Their father, Edward Dickinson, was a Calvinist lawyer and statesman of gloomy conviction, with a heart Emily described as "pure and terrible". As he warned his fiancee before their marriage: "I do not expect or wish for a life of pleasure." Austin, Emily and Lavinia ("Vinnie") both resisted and inherited their father's intensity of spirit. In Gordon's view, being part of this passionate, intellectual and unshakeably serious clan was a significant factor in Dickinson's poetic genius. The great Dickinson family drama reached its height in 1882, only a few years before Emily's death. By the mid-1850s she had become a virtual recluse at the Homestead. There she maintained her intimate friendship with Sue, who lived next door at the Evergreens, the home Edward Dickinson had built for his son's family. For many years, Emily crossed the little path between the houses, reading her poems to Sue, and giving her hundreds to keep. Sue, in return, gave her books by British women writers - Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte Bronte and George Eliot. But in 1882, this idyll was interrupted when Sue's husband, Austin, fell in love with a young Amherst faculty wife, Mabel Bingham Todd, and began a heated affair with her that became an "alternative marriage". At the same time, the inexhaustible Mabel was keeping up an active sexual life with her husband, the astronomer David Todd. A serial philanderer himself, and a consenting partner to Mabel's affair with Austin, David was also willing to experiment as voyeur in a menage a trois. Sue knew about it and suffered, along with her children; and Emily and Vinnie knew as well. After Emily's death in May 1886, the family feud over her poetic legacy began, and the last third of Gordon's book is devoted to unravelling its legal and psychological complexities. The handwritten poems were almost illegible. Mabel, who had become Vinnie's friend, was entrusted with the copying and editing tasks; it was Mabel, who had never actually seen Emily face to face, who created the myth of her as the fragile woman in white. In August 1890, Mabel and Vinnie brought out a small edition of 116 poems. It was a huge success, reprinted 11 times in a year and selling 11,000 copies. Meanwhile, Sue's attempts to publish the poems and letters in her possession failed. She managed to get one poem into Scribner's for a fee of $15. Vinnie drastically underestimated Mabel's editorial skills, calling them merely clerical; Vinnie gave her $200 for her efforts but refused to acknowledge her contributions. The Todds sued for part of the Homestead grounds in recompense, and lost the case when Vinnie testified that she had been too innocent to understand signing a contract. Thereafter Mabel refused to continue editing. The feud went on through the next generation and the families quarrelled bitterly over which university libraries would get the manuscripts. Gordon does not take on the history of modern criticism of Dickinson's poems, but her book, by clearing away much that is speculative, projected, or contentious about the life, will open the way for new approaches to the woman she calls "the poet next door". Noted literary biographer Gordon (senior research fellow, St. Hilda's Coll., Oxford; Virginia Woolf: A Writer's Life) combed the archival record, including newly available materials, and presents a twofold thesis about her subject: first, that Dickinson's seclusion was due to an epileptic condition; second, that the question of who should manage and present to the world Dickinson's oeuvre and the details of her life has been influenced by a family feud that began in Dickinson's lifetime and continues to color scholarship to this day. The key person in this feud was Mabel Todd, who became the mistress of Emily's married brother Austin, altering the relationships among the remaining principals: Austin, Emily, their sister Lavinia, and Austin's wife, Sue. The first portion of the book, drawing extensively on Dickinson's own words put into context as explanation of her physical and mental state, is speculative and not entirely convincing as proof of epilepsy. The second part, however, on the nature and impact of the feud, is well developed and engrossing.
