Summary:
The U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 was the most significant and tragic event in Minnesota's history. The settlers living in southwest Minnesota were utterly traumatized by the sudden and so very violent assault which the Dakota made upon them. Very few settlers could withstand the whirlwind which was mercilessly buffeting them. When all was said and done, there were at least 650 whites-men, women, and children-who were killed, and about 100 Dakota warriors. It was of such great magnitude that it still reverberates in various ways today. Given its significance, numerous markers have been established throughout the over 150 years since the event. This comprehensive guidebook details hundreds of sites, including markers, the few period buildings, gravestones of those who were killed by the Dakota plus those who played key roles in the war, and the gravestones and markers of the Dakota. Now, with the publication of this book, those individuals who are interested in the subject have this guide to use, visiting those sites which are of interest to them. It will be an unparalleled educational experience for many. While the epicenter of the war was in the Minnesota River valley, the tsunami it generated reached in to Iowa, Nebraska Territory, Dakota Territory and Wisconsin. --
