Something mysterious is happening in Skeleton Creek. Something scary. Something sinister.
Ryan came close to it . . . and nearly died. Now he's trapped in his house. He can't trust anyone-not even himself.

Author Patrick Carman was born in Salem, Oregon on February 27, 1966. He received a degree in economics from Willamette University. Before becoming a full-time author, he worked in advertising, game design, and technology. He is the author of The Land of Elyon series, the Atherton series, and Skeleton Creek.

In a much-anticipated "multi-platform" mystery, Carman (the Land of Elyon series) tells of two small-town teens who go looking for trouble in an abandoned dredge once used to find gold. Presented as the journal of 15-year-old Ryan, the book is produced on ruled paper and in a font resembling handwriting; Ryan unfolds the details of the recent accident that has left him laid up with a broken leg. Periodically, Ryan receives e-mails from Sarah, his fellow sleuth, who is still hunting down clues about ghostly sightings at the dredge, and, armed with a video camera, is posting her findings on a Web site. (Readers can access the site with the passwords in the book.) The premise is more intriguing than the execution. Clues come slowly and don't keep the reader guessing so much as perplexed: Sarah's brief clips are just as much hair-twirling musings as plot-thickeners. Readers should know in advance what the otherwise enticing package does not make clear: this is the first in a series, and anyone expecting that it will end on anything but a cliff-hanger will be disappointed. Ryan and Sarah explore an old gold dredge in their town and discover a dark mystery surrounding a string of accidents. Ryan's journal recounts their adventure and includes passwords to Sarah's videos. The videos (which are posted on the Internet for readers to watch) capture the serialized feel of online storytelling and are more compelling than the book itself, which can ramble. A gimmick? You betcha. But given the novelty and the advertising blast this novel with accompanying Web videos is getting, this is something kids will want. And Carman's accessible, journal-type text, full of mystery and foreshadowing, pulls from the outset. Teenage Ryan records the circumstances that landed him with a broken leg, forever according to his parents parted from his partner in mischief, Sarah Fincher. But parental edicts mean little in the face of a true mystery in the teens' boring town, so the two use technology to keep in touch: while Ryan journals and frets, Sarah films her adventures, references to which appear periodically in the journal along with the address of a Web site where they can be viewed. With an appropriately homemade look, the nicely choreographed videos definitely build atmosphere, but for most of the novel, readers won't miss vital clues if a computer isn't close at hand. It's the ending that really annoys: the last page of the journal leads to a video that promises answers but not until May 2009. A spoiler? YEARS ago, I was a supporter of a new literary movement, one that uprooted the traditional tenets of narrative in modem fiction: Choose Your Own Adventure. The books in that series, which first appeared in 1979, did so much more than simply tell a tale: by offering the reader choices at critical junctures, each one gave a rapt fourth grader like me the opportunity to shape the story. (If you decide to use turbo boost, turn to Page 48. If you decide to use shields, turn to Page 50.) And, boy, were they addictive: Each novel would be voraciously consumed by a band of Toughskin-clad post-structuralists. I would kick Josh Zimring in the shins to get my hands on a copy before he did. A new genre of books for children tries to tweak narrative norms in a similar fashion. While not exactly creating an original form of user-generated content the way the Choose Your Own Adventure books did, they are using the Internet to expand beyond print. Of the three considered here, "Spaceheadz," by Jon Scieszka with Francesco Sedita, uses the Internet in the most straightforward - but also the most entertaining - way. Various Web sites are mentioned in its pages, and in a few instances these sites provide information that helps propel the plot (a fifth-grade boy is befriended by three extraterrestrials in human disguise; he must help them recruit millions of kids to their cause or Earth gets "turned off"). But for the most part, the online content serves more like the extras you get on a special-edition DVD. This is not necessarily a bad thing. The sites - including Anti-Alien Agency and Mrs. Halley's Comets - are witty, fun and full of a surprising amount of content. The online material is not some brave new effort at storytelling, as you can read the book without ever visiting any of the sites, but it's an admirable and enjoyable extension of the world Scieszka and Sedita have created. "Skeleton Creek: The Crossbones," the third installment of the "Skeleton Creek" series, goes further in straddling analog and digital realms. The continuing story of Ryan McCray and Sarah Fincher's investigation into the supernatural conspiracy surrounding their hometown is one part "X-Files," one part "Blair Witch Project." Sarah, an aspiring filmmaker, records her various expeditions and posts videos of them on her site, at sarahfincher.com, which readers can access when they encounter various passwords throughout the book. The videos are pretty spooky, and Sarah's site is full of hidden links that make repeated visits worthwhile. Unfortunately, reality requires the book to make some compromises. Given that not everyone has access to the Internet at all times, the book's narrator, Ryan, is prone to recapping the videos in the pages that follow each new password. In this fashion, the book tries to have it both ways: it wants to offer a rich multimedia experience for the reader while having the story stand on its own, broadband connection or not. But "The Crossbones" makes a different attempt to bridge online and offline content that is more interesting and important. At various times, Sarah and Ryan find information useful to their investigation by way of a Google or YouTube search. These searches are described in some detail - enough so that a reader can go down the same path and find the same information. These are not Web pages made by the book's author to appear real, but actual sites and videos that predate the book. This "found search result" form of storytelling is a clever way to bring in the outside world without calling too much attention to the practice. "THE SEARCH FOR WONDLA," by Tony DiTerlizzi, about young Eva Nine and her search for other humans on the planet Orbona, is perhaps the strongest of the three books mentioned here, with passages that are reminiscent of Arthur C. Clarke. WondLa-Vision works in concert with your PC's webcam. There are three illustrations spread throughout the book that can be "recognized" by WondLa-Vision. If you hold any of these up to your webcam while at the site, you will unlock an online map of Orbona (different images open different parts of the map). If only it were that simple, though. First you have to go to wondla.com. Then you have to download the WondLa-Vision software. Then you have to open that software back on the site. This creates two new windows on your screen, but it's never clear why. Then you have to wait about three minutes for WondLa-Vision to start. During this time, the WondLa-Vision window doesn't so much pop up as pop over - you can't minimize it or pull anything in front of it while you wait. Once WondLa-Vision is ready for action, you hold one of the book's images up to the webcam and wait for recognition. Finally, a map unfolds on the screen. The map is not clickable, though it does move around some, and you can move it yourself by moving the book in front of the webcam. Why you would, though, is unclear. The movements of the map are jerky and unpredictable, and if your webcam is on top of your monitor, you have to hold the book right in front of your face, making it hard to see what you're actually doing. But this makes it sound as if, once the execution is solved, all might be aces. The problem is not only that WondLa-Vision is time-consuming and temperamental, but the payoff is weak. All you get for your trouble is a map that doesn't do much more than the printed version you find at the end of the book. WondLa-Vision serves as a cautionary tale about technology: just because you can do something technologically doesn't necessarily mean you should. THESE three books point to a medium in transition. They still require readers to jump from book, to computer, back to book again. But with the rise of e-readers and other tablet devices like Apple's iPad, I have to imagine that some author is hard at work creating a fully digital experience that combines text, video, animation and data. Books, movies and video games will all contribute to this new form of storytelling, and I would not be surprised if it happens to children's and young adult literature first. Gr 6 Up-Ryan McCray and Sarah Fincher wonder how Skeleton Creek, OR, received its name. Research takes them on a nighttime expedition to a mechanical dredge, where Ryan breaks his leg. The teens think the dredge is haunted by Joe Bush, a miner killed there. The book is interspersed with Sarah's videos, which can be accessed on the Internet. The mystery remains to be solved; sequels are guaranteed. Plot weaknesses mitigate the teen appeal of the Internet tie-in concept. The book's central flaw: it is not scary. Ryan's narration should provide creepy immediacy, but his constant insistence that he is petrified never plays out in the story. The book ramps up and peters out, without a climax or resolution of the mystery. The repetitive musings hold the pace to a slow walk, and Carman relies on contrivance to keep adults at bay. Another reason it lags is the lack of synergy between Ryan and Sarah, even though they are supposedly best friends. They communicate only via electronic means (their parents have forbidden their friendship), and their individual findings don't dovetail into one coherent story line. Even if one stops to watch Sarah's videos, there seem to be missing pieces of information that make the plot hard to follow. Mischance befalls 15-year-old Ryan as he investigates the shadowed past of his small Oregon town, leaving him with a broken leg and the threat of a cross-country move if he attempts to contact his best friend and fellow investigator, Sarah. After disabling the monitoring software on his computer, Ryan and Sarah continue to communicate through surreptitious videos. Ryan's faux-journal entries are meticulously faux-printed on faux-lined paper, with faux-printouts pasted in; this text narrative is interrupted by instructions to visit the book's website, where increasingly esoteric passwords unlock the appropriate videos. More gimmick than narrative necessity, the videos crackle with annoyingly fake static. Inspired by the interactive thread used in Cathy's Book (by Sean Stewart and Jordan Weisman, 2006), Carman's storytelling is not sufficiently compelling to motivate readers to continually break the narrative to look at digital content. The printed ending builds the suspense, but readers will be disappointed by the final video message, which cheapens the genuine mystery with a cliffhanger ending.
