Booklist Review
Ito's legacy as a horror manga artist lives on with his most recent collection of short stories, Shiver. The short stories are selected by Ito himself and are accompanied by his notes and commentary. Each story brings fresh horror: a body covered in holes, demonic puppets, homicidal balloons, etc. One particular story consists of a family whose ancestors' heads are still attached to one body, resulting in a revolting human-centipede. In typical Ito fashion, this manga is absolutely horrifying. Readers will find themselves reacting to phobias they weren't aware they had. His drawings are haunting, imprinting themselves in the mind like a bad nightmare. Ito's work is not for the faint of heart. His stories are psychologically upsetting as well as visually terrifying. His notes are equally enthralling, allowing a glimpse into the mind of a true horror genius. Readers may want to read this in daylight, or maybe while surrounded by friends armed with flashlights.--Fiona McMahon Copyright 2018 Booklist
Library Journal Review
For close to three decades, Ito (Tomie; -Dissolving Classroom) has been one of the most thrilling and innovative creators of horror manga in the world. This personally curated collection of nine favorite short stories produced over the span of his career serves as a superb introduction to his work. A recording of a recently deceased woman crooning becomes a source of obsession for anyone listening. A city is attacked by enormous, floating heads. A successful painter, shaken by an encounter with a mysterious young woman, commits an act of awful violence in an attempt to restore his confidence. Ito switches among Lovecraft-inspired investigations of cosmic menace, body horror in the manner of filmmaker David Cronenberg, and tales of terror emerging from the most mundane sources, reminiscent of Stephen King. But ultimately he's unlike anyone else in his ability to create images that seem drawn from a highly specific, personal, and primordial well of utter darkness. Some -horror creeps up on you, Ito's leaps screaming at your face. VERDICT Ito is one of the few manga artists with total crossover appeal, making this collection an essential addition.-TB © Copyright 2018.
