Author Notes
Doreen Cronin was born in Queens, New york. She grew up in Merrick, Long Island. She attended Pennysylvania State University where she majored in journalism. Eventually she found herself using her journalism background in the world of publishing. and she turned her sights toward law and attended St. john's University School of Law. She went on to work as an attorney in a Manhattan Law firm. She wrote her book Click, Clack, Moo, Cows That Type in 1995, shortly after the death of her father. It took another five years, however, before the book was published. She stated in her bio that this book was not only her first published book but also the easiest book to write, taking her only about 20 minutes to jot down the story. The book went on to become a Caldecott Honor Book. While the book eventually met with great success, publishers rejected it repeatedly for several years until a publisher eventually called her with the news that it would be published. Her success as a children's author continued with books such as Diary of a Worm published in 2003 and winner of Parent's Choice Award Slver 2003 Picture Book, Diary of a Spider published in 2003 and Rescue Bunnies. She made the 2013 New York Times High Profiles List with her title Click, Clack, Boo!: A Tricky Treat.

Horn Book Review
The fifth misadventure of the Chicken Squad starts at the bottom of a hole. Sugar, who dug the hole, hopes Dirt, Poppy, and Sweetie can manage to rescue her from it. (Not exactly.) Sugar intends the hole as a storm shelter for a potential future weather crisis: Listen, whether it strikes today or tomorrow or next week doesnt matterWhat matters is that we are prepared for it! The storm shelter sparks no end of disagreement among the chickens, and the conversation veers wildly from meteorology to flatulence (Its Latin for who cut the cheese) to the United States Constitution and voting rights (A secret password to vote? Thats unconstitutional!). The wacky Chicken Squad drama bears some unmistakable resemblances to real political issues, as the chickens continue to debate over who will be welcome to use the shelter. Elsewhere in the yard, the squirrels and the chipmunks are now digging their own private holes just in case, though they are not sure of what. In the end, when a real emergency strikes, the chickens, the squirrels, and the chipmunks all bumble through it together, and if they learn little else, they do recognize that working together works best and that e pluribus unum (out of many, one) is not Latin for one big hole. Slapstick humor, a large font, and regular spot art keep this series entertaining and accessible for new chapter book readers. julie roach (c) Copyright 2017.
