Choice Review
For those that know the National Geographic Society's Field Guide to the Birds of North America (5th ed., 2006; 1st ed., CH, Jun'84) by expert birder/author Dunn and author/illustrator/ornithologist Alderfer, here is an updated rendition, with a little extra. This "folio edition" has pages that approach 9 x 12 inches in size, and for all practical purposes, is simply an enlarged version of the popular and exceptionally well done field guide. The text has been reproduced, as have the color plates. The larger format displays the finer points of the artwork to great advantage. The 700 distribution maps have been updated, and it appears that the larger size has allowed for the presentation of more detail. This is an excellent treatment of North American birds; the volume should be in most libraries with significant biological or ornithological holdings, as well as on the shelves of birding enthusiasts. If readers were buying a first bird book for their collections, this fine reference would merit careful consideration. It is not intended, however, for use as a field guide--too big, too heavy. Includes more than 4,000 illustrations covering 970 species. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academic, professional, and public libraries, all levels. P. K. Lago University of Mississippi
