When he finds a missing dog poster, Skunk decides to impersonate the dog and join its family. With the help of his three friends (a hilarious trio starring a squirrel, alley cat, and raccoon), Skunk starts training to be a dog. Through a series of entertaining events, Skunk learns that maybe the family he has been searching for has always been right by his side. The good-humored dialogue between Skunk and his friends is really where this book shines. VERDICT With Collier's playful yet adorable pictures to bring the characters to life, this book will find a home among animal lovers and humor fans alike.--Lauren White

A lonely skunk longs for a family. Skunk looks wistfully at the pooches in the dog park. They all have families who love them, and he wishes he had that kind of love. Head hanging, he bumps into a pole and suddenly sees a flyer for a missing dog. This is his chance! He can become that dog! The family will never suspect a thing. (Astute readers may already guess where this is heading.) Raccoon, Squirrel, and Cat decide to help Skunk with his transformation. A well-placed sock and glove become floppy ears, and Skunk's white stripe is painted black. Now Skunk just needs to learn about burying bones, rolling over on command, and begging for belly rubs. The sly plot unfolds in a series of speech bubbles above the foursome's heads. Alas, there's one special (stinky) skunk attribute that just might spoil this whole plan. Skunk's eyes grow wide, and his bottom starts to wiggle. The anticipation grows over a few pages--sure to elicit giggles--until Skunk's cover is blown. The four pals then set out to search for the real lost dog, creating a joyful reunion and cementing their friendship. Collier's artwork blends cartoonish humor with moments of tenderness; this is a funny but sweetly told tale of found family. Explores belonging and identity with humor. Collier delights readers with a tale about a skunk trying to find a family to belong to. Jovial digital illustrations with a cool background palette push the cartoonish animal characters front and center of this heartening friendship story. Skunk, tired of being alone, longs to be part of a family. His chance presents itself when he sees a flyer for a lost dog, Max. Seizing the opportunity, he asks the neighborhood posse, composed of a cat, a squirrel, and a raccoon, to help him disguise himself as Max. The hilarious disguise, made of a sock and glove for dog ears and a belt and earring for a dog collar, becomes useless when Skunk realizes Max is lost. Skunk, feeling terrible, asks the neighborhood posse to help him reunite Max with his family; in the process, he realizes he's found an unconventional family to love him. A mix of speech bubbles and text gives the feel of a graphic novel. Humorous facial expressions and dialogue add buoyancy to this tender tale.
