Five friends from diverse backgrounds learn how to navigate common childhood challenges, new experiences, and the world around them in the realistic and kid-friendly Confetti Kids early chapter books.
Pablo and his friends want to spend the last day of summer at Coney Island. They can ride bumper cars or play ring toss--there's so much to do! But first, they need to figure out how to get to Coney Island from their neighborhood. It's a long trip on the bus and subway, so it's a good thing Pablo has his trusty maps to help them find the way. Coney Island or bust!

Sheri Tan is a freelance writer and editor of books for children. She has worked at major publishers in New York City, as well as a publishing house in Singapore, where she wrote the middle-grade chapter-book series Girl Overboard . She loves to travel and hopes to one day say that she's been to every continent in the world! When she's not globe-trotting, Tan lives in Queens, New York, with her husband and two sons.
Shirley Ng-Benitez is a Bay Area children's book author/illustrator who has illustrated 35+ children's books, and has a background in Graphic Design (GabbyandCo.com), and hand-lettering (American Greetings, Inc.). She works and experiments in traditional mediums including watercolor, gouache, pen&ink, oils, and painted & cut-paper collage. Her work draws from a deep wish to add more compassion and connection in the world through her art and stories. She founded @AWEtober on Instagram, an annual art auction fundraiser since '20, whose efforts have raised tens of thousands for various organizations supporting victims of the California wildfires, and efforts in coral reef restoration around the globe. Follow finds map-loving Pablo leading his pals on a day trip to Coney Island via city bus and subway. In Buddy, Padma helps decorate a â€~buddy benchâ€TM for classmates in need of friends. The story lines are somewhat bland, but the always-helpful group of friends, illustrated with a variety of skin tones in Ng-Benitez's cheery digitally altered watercolor pictures, is warmly portrayed. Sometimes getting there is half the fun!Pablo and his friends Henry, Lily, Mei, and Padma (the kids present as Latinx, white, black, Asian, and South Asian, respectively) decide to go to Coney Island as a fun way to end the summer. Pablo's dad, who, like his son, has brown skin, agrees to accompany the children. "But how do we get there?" asks Lily. Pablo suggests that they use maps, and then he excitedly plots out their journey: First they will walk to the bus stop; then they will take a bus to the subway; then they will arrive at Coney Island. A true cartophile, Pablo experiences a moment of worry that his friends won't "think it [is] fun to follow a map," but his map-reading expertise ends up helping the children be patient as they traverse the city. The best map of all is the one that shows all of the fun rides on Coney Island. An activity suggestion in the backmatter prompts readers to make maps of their own neighborhoods, potentially extending this title's use beyond its accessibility and support of emergent-literacy skills and into the realm of map-reading, too. As in her other work in this series, Ng-Benitez's warm, engaging illustrations help define the individual, diverse characters while creating a sense of vibrancy and excitement in the urban setting.For readers who are going places. The eighth Dive into Reading book features a diverse cast of neighborhood friends. This time, Pablo takes the lead, organizing a trip to Coney Island and carefully mapping their route. They walk to the bus stop, take the bus to the subway, then ride the subway to Coney Island. The story guides the reader through the logistics of taking public transportation. It is a classic beginning reader, with three short chapters, strong pictorial support of text, a blend of phonetic and sight words, and plenty of repeating phrases. The final page explains how to create your own neighborhood map, extending the book's STEM focus and emphasizing the theme that maps are fun. Digitally altered watercolor illustrations capture the kids' emotions and add rich details such as Lily's kitten purse, a community garden, and a woman in a hijab waiting for the subway.
