Booklist Review

Joseph Nathan Kane edited the first edition of Facts about the Presidents, and though he died in 2002 (at the age of 103), his name still appears on the eighth. Kane was one of those prodigious fact gatherers who generated some of the most enduring reference classics. So first, a few facts about Joseph Nathan Kane: (bullet)He was born in 1899. (bullet)He was at various times a Morse code operator, export manager, and freelance self-syndicated journalist. (bullet)His first book, Famous First Facts, was rejected by 11 other publishers before it was published by Halsey W. Wilson in 1933. (bullet)He hosted a weekly national radio program called Famous First Facts, 1938-1939. (bullet)During the 1940s and 1950s he was the foremost authority for questions asked on radio and television quiz shows. (bullet)He was called on for answers by the White House several times a year. The first edition of Facts about the Presidents was published in 1959, and it has been a staple of library collections ever since. The latest edition follows the same tried-and-true format as the previous editions. Part 1, Biographical Data, contains the official facts profiles for each president, including vital statistics and a summary listing religion, ancestry, occupation, places of death and burial (if applicable), and more. This is followed by information on the president's family parents, children, siblings, wife. Then comes the political information election summaries, profile of the vice president (and sometimes of the Second Lady ), names of cabinet members, important dates in the administration, and a narrative. Information is current through Barack Obama's inauguration. The second part of the book, Comparative Data, contains what might be called the fun facts which presidents were Masons, which presidents' wives had children from a previous marriage, which vice presidents died in office, to name just a few examples of the items found here. Part 2 also contains facts about the office of the presidency. New to this edition are black-and-white photographs and other images. Classic or not, why do libraries still need Facts about the Presidents when Web-based resources such as Wikipedia and the Internet Public Library's POTUS page (www.ipl.org/div/potus), not to mention the sites of various presidential libraries, abound? In a word, convenience. Wikipedia's presidential articles can all be accessed from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States, and each one has a fact box offering some of the same information found in Facts. But though most of the Wikipedia articles contain an impressive amount of information, they vary widely in terms of what they cover and how they are arranged. The POTUS pages are all formatted in a standard way and offer some facts, but they are essentially gateways, and their strength is the links they provide. Print versus online isn't always an either-or proposition, and Facts about the Presidents is a good example of a print reference source that works well in tandem with more up-to-date Web resources. This book (7th ed., CH, Jul'02, 39-6182) continues to be one of the most useful single-volume reference guides available about the American presidency. Part 1 features biographical data on the presidents, vice presidents, and their spouses in chronological order (including initial data about the Obamas and Bidens). Each profile contains basic personal and political data about the president, family history (including information about marriages, siblings, and any children), personal information about the first lady, important dates in the president's life, election data, summary of inaugurations, information about the vice president, list of cabinet appointments, data about Congress during the president's term(s) in office, appointments to the Supreme Court (if applicable), important dates, and additional material. This last part of the profile generally consists of a descriptive summation of key challenges and achievements of each president's term in office. Profiles conclude with a list of further readings that includes books about the president but excludes, e.g., presidential papers series, presidential libraries' Web addresses, and key archival sites. Each profile also includes a portrait of the president, first lady, vice president, and second lady, along with other illustrations and pictures.Part 2 contains data comparing and contrasting biographical, political, and chronological elements for the presidents, vice presidents, and their families. This section is particularly useful because it highlights various presidents' life experiences and details key similarities that can be both trivial (each president has liked ice cream) and illuminating (with the exception of Obama, all of the presidents had UK, German, Swiss, Dutch, or French ancestry). Also featured here is an enormous quantity of interesting data that have not been compiled anywhere else. Data appear to be accurate, though Woodrow Wilson's birthday is listed incorrectly as December 29, 1856 (rather than December 28). Summing Up: Highly recommended.
