School Library Journal Review
Gr 1-3It's the last day of school for Horrible Harry and the 2B gang and Song Lee has invited the class to a party at the local amusement park to celebrate. With his usual exuberance and brashness, Harry brags that he goes on all the scary rides. His nemesis, Sidney, hears this and challenges him to a ride in the Drop of Doom. As he tells it, "...in this hotel is an elevator. You get in the elevator and go up to the thirteenth floor. Suddenly, SNAP! The cable breaks, and the elevator drops thirteen floors before it stops." Harry looks sick and later admits to his friends that the one thing he's afraid of is elevators. Suspense builds until the final chapter in which the second grader overcomes his phobia, exclaiming, "It's Wonderland!" Readers will join in the laughter when they learn that Sidney had his eyes closed during the descent. Another perfect chapter book for transitional readers.Suzanne Hawley, Laurel Oak Elementary School, Naples, FL (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review
In the continued adventures of Harry and his second-grade classmates, Harry is worried about having to go on the frightening new ride at the end-of-school party at the amusement park. Once he admits his fears, Song Lee helps him overcome them. The characters are likable, the situation is one children can relate to, and the format, subject, and tone are all just right for newly accomplished readers. Booklist Review
Gr. 2^-4. The ninth installment in this series about the students in Miss Mackle's class (the eighth was Horrible Harry and the Purple People [1997]) finds second grade coming to a close. To celebrate, Song Lee invites Harry and five other classmates to spend the day at Mountainside Amusement Park. Harry looks forward to the outing until Sidney describes the park's newest attraction--a 13-story drop inside the elevator of a haunted hotel. The ride terrifies Harry because he was once stuck inside an elevator, but he fears Sidney's taunting even more. Kline's breezy text features short chapters, believable characters and situations, and just enough drama for the beginning chapter book set. And Miss Mackle's announcement that the class will be "looping" together for third grade suggests that Kline may be planning more Harry stories. --Kay Weisman
