A little girl relates the simple text as her great-grandmother is shown making tortillas for her grandmother over an outdoor fire, her grandmother makes them for her mother in a farm kitchen with a cast-iron stove, her mother is shown cooking for her in a modern kitchen, and the child prepares paper tortillas for her doll on a toy stove. Each activity shares the refrain: "Every time it was the same, but different." The timeless quality of maternal love is evident throughout. Six Costa Rican women worked together to produce the striking acrylic folk-art paintings. With deeply saturated, glowing tones and a decidedly Central American style, the pictures enhance and extend the lyrical narrative, which is printed in English and in Spanish. The words and music of a traditional Spanish lullaby are appended. A lovely, nostalgic glimpse at Central American family life.Denise E. Reiser, a prolific children's author, highlights four different activities that are passed from one generation to the next-making tortillas, gathering flowers, washing clothes, and singing lullabies. Using repetitive, rhythmic text, a little girl tells how her grand-grandmother, grandmother, and mother did the same things for their daughters, and how she does these activities for her doll. The bright, clear watercolor illustrations-beautifully executed by a group of six veteran women painters in Costa Rica known as Corazones Valientes-depict in elegant simplicity the changing social landscape of three generations. In addition, several librarian consultants assisted in a straightforward translation. Recommended for all school and public libraries. U.S.: East West Discovery Press. 2007. 32 p. 978-0-9669437-9-5. $18.95.K-Gr 4-Seki recounts the folktale about the origin of the lucky cat statue "Menaki Neko," which is revered in Japan as a symbol of fortune and good luck. Toymaker Tokuzo is traveling the country selling his wares when he suddenly witnesses a horse running into a cat, injuring it severely. The man cares for the animal and dresses its wounds; however, in spite of his efforts, the cat dies. Saddened, Tokuzo buries it and gets ready to leave the village. But when a big thunder storm arises, the man has to take shelter under a large tree. He hears a meow and notices that the feline sitting by the temple looks exactly like the one he has just buried. As Tokuzo joyfully runs toward it, a bolt of lightning shatters the tree where he was standing, thus saving his life. Watercolor-and-pencil illustrations of deep blues, greens, and earth tones accent this delightful story. The design, architectural details, and depiction of the Japanese landscape give the work an authentic flavor; and the clear translation adequately captures the English text. Told from the perspective of a young girl, the story opens with her great-grandmother making tortillas for the girl's grandmother, then moves through each successive generation to the present day, as the child makes tortillas for her doll. Gathering flowers, washing clothes, and singing lullabies are the other commonplace occurrences exalted by the mantras, which always conclude, ``Every time it was the same, but different.'' Placing the English text at top of every page and the corresponding Spanish text at the bottom creates a unique border for the lush, colorful illustrations, created by a consortium of Costa Rican women known as the ``Valiant Hearts.'' The bright, richly detailed pictures are almost overwhelming as they draw readers' eyes into the lives portrayed. Elements within each picture identify the eraone dress is washed in a stream, another in a washing machineand provide children with something of a searching game for details that demonstrate the passing of time. In both books, simple phrases and gentle repetition convey the enduring nature of love and the reassuring continuity of life. (Picture book. 4-8)
