Summary
Cluck, cluck, cheep, cheep! Count from one to ten with Maisy in a farmyard game of hide-and-seek.
It's bedtime, but where have all of Mommy Hen's chicks gone? Maisy is quickly on the case to find them, and little readers can help, too--by lifting the flaps to see who's hiding in the stable, by the tractor, or up in the apple tree. Will all ten chicks be safe and accounted for by the last turn of the page?

School Library Journal Review
PreS-In this lift-the-flap counting book, Mama Hen needs to find her 10 chicks before bedtime. With Maisy's help, they find all of them, one at a time, around the farm. Each one is hidden behind a flap with a friend. This adds the opportunity to point out the different animals and their sounds. As each chick is found, they join the search and are labeled with brightly colored numerals to help in the counting process. The story is simple, but flaps are always popular with preschoolers, and the colorful, boldly outlined illustrations highlight the numbers. Horn Book Review
Maisy helps Mommy Hen track down her ten little chicks in time for bed. Starting at the stable, they make their way around the farm ("Are there any chicks in the trailer? Or in the tractor? Are there any chicks in the apple tree?"), picking up the little ones as they go. The last chick proves somewhat elusive (spoiler alert: it's not behind the flour sack, in the wheelbarrow, behind the beehive, or in the watering can), but by book's end, everyone is accounted for, and the chickens all snuggle into their coop for some zzzs. It's the simplest of concept books, but well executed. Large pages, friendly illustrations, old friends (Cyril, Charlie, Eddie, etc.), lots of white space, engaging flaps, cute hiding places, clearly labeled numerals, and a very simple story line -- but there is one -- all play very nicely together. elissa gershowitz (c) Copyright 2015. Kirkus Review
Barnyard antics combine with flaps and basic counting skills in this, the latest of Maisy's adventures. With bedtime on the horizon, Mommy Hen enlists Maisy's aid in rounding up her widely scattered little flock. With a variety of shaped flaps, Maisy's search for each chick takes readers to different parts of the farm. From the pigsty to the apple tree, eventually nine of the errant fowl are accounted for. Finding the last and 10th, however, requires a bit more work (and quite a few more flaps) before the final chick returns to its family. As if starring in a reverse telling of the song "Five Little Ducks," Mommy Hen's ever increasing brood will provide a great deal of amusement for the toddler and preschooler set. As they are found one by one, they accompany Maisy while she searches around the farm, often riding on her head or tail and once, in a particularly surreal touch, even on an elephant. While the book hardly breaks new ground, the counting combined with the flaps, appealing barnyard animals and varied farm locations make this an ideal counting companion to better known stories and songs, such as "Old MacDonald." A book that doesn't take any "cheep" shots at the material. (Picture book. 3-5) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist Review
With help from Maisy, Mommy Hen searches for her 10 little chicks. Kids can help, too, by lifting the flaps on one page after another. The stable door opens to show one chick balancing on the horse's nose. The gate swings outward to reveal the second chick with a friendly cow. When all are found, the chickens head home for bedtime. The simple text offers just enough narrative, along with plenty of opportunities for counting chicks and lifting flaps. Cousins' distinctive gouache paintings define the characters and settings with her familiar bold black lines and bright colors. An interactive, large-format picture book from the popular Maisy series.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2014 Booklist
